Academic Grade: Your final grade at the end of each 9 weeks is determined as follows:

20% Classwork and Homework

35% Quizzes

45% Tests

Note: An exam administered at the end of each semester will comprise 25% of each final semester grade.

This is a high school credit course in which you should strive for A’s and B’s in order to begin your high school grade point average (G.P.A.) on the right note.

Hillsborough County’s new pupil progression plan states that students must earn 3 credits for math (6th, 7th, Algebra or PreAlgebra) to be promoted to high school. The State of Florida expects students who score at a level 3 or higher (grade 7 FCAT) to be enrolled in Algebra 1. If the Algebra course is not a good fit for a student, any schedule change must happen as soon as possible. Any grade earned (including a D or an F) for Algebra 1/Honors will be included on the students’ official high school transcript. This change means that students who do not successfully pass Algebra and the End of Course exam in May, 2014, may be retained in 8th grade.

Exams:

A county-developed semester exam worth 25% of the first semester grade will be administered at the end of the second quarter. We will have extensive reviews at that time.

The state of Florida has created a computerized end-of-course cumulative exam which will be administered in May, 2014. Students must pass the computer based Algebra End of Course Exam (EOC) in order to earn the Algebra credit required for a high school diploma. Students will have an opportunity to practice in the computer lab at school, as well as on their computers at home, prior to taking the EOC.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

Work will be assigned each day to be completed in class or it will become homework. All assigned work will be checked for completion and answers reviewed the following day unless otherwise specified. Work must be written in pencil and all work must be shown to receive full credit. No excuses*. No late work*. You will either receive 100% for completed work, a 50% for incomplete work that is more than halfway finished, or a zero. Assignments are to be written on the table of contents and kept in numerical order in the notebook. It is expected that students will check the odd answers to any homework assigned from the textbook.

*Students will receive 3 “Oops” passes which will allow them to excuse an assignment or earn 2 extra points on a test.

Quizzes are usually given after every few sections throughout each chapter. They are generally announced two to three days ahead of time and we usually review the material the day before the quiz. Quizzes are to be kept in the notebook as they are excellent study resources for tests and semester exams. Dropping a quiz grade Students who maintain at least an 80% homework category average will earn the privilege of dropping their lowest quiz grade at the end of each quarter. The dropping of a low quiz grade is a privilege meant to reward hard-working students who consistently complete and turn in their homework. Students will receive 2 points added to their quiz grade when the graded quiz paper is returned with a parent signature within 2 days of getting the quiz back.

Tests will be given at the end of most chapters. Tests will be announced in advance and will be reviewed on the day before the test. Students will receive 2 points added to their test grade when the graded test paper is returned with a parent signature within 2 days of getting the test back.

Notebooks will be kept by each student in the appropriate AM/PM binder. Students are expected to maintain a neat and organized binder at all times. All assignments should be in the correct assignment number/date order, along with all quizzes and tests. An organized notebook is essential for success in this high school credit class. Students should expect to have a Notebook Quiz at least once per quarter.

Absence procedure:

Upon returning from an absence, students are required to copy all missed day(s) agendas from the board, copy any missed notes and collect any missed handouts. It is the student’s responsibility to complete all make-up work and turn it in within a reasonable period of time (usually 2-3 days depending on the number of days missed). Work due on the day of absence is due immediately upon the student’s return. Tests and quizzes are to be made up immediately upon return to school. School business (field trips, planned school events, etc.) is NOT an absence. Students are responsible for the work as if you were in class.

Behavioral Expectations:

You are expected to be on time and in your seat with materials ready when the bell rings each day. You are expected to perform to the best of your ability and to respect yourself and others. You are expected to act in a way that will not disrupt the educational process. School rules must be followed (e.g. no gum, candy, etc). Infractions will result in conduct cuts. Conduct grades are determined by number of conduct cuts received. Repeated rule violations may count as 2 conduct cuts as this type of repeat behavior constitutes defiance. Further incidents may be handled through parent contact, detention, and/or referrals to the office.

Algebra Honors students have access to a wealth of valuable technology through Pearson’s interactive web portal at Online video tutors, interactive practice problems, and full student editions of workbooks and textbooks are available to enhance learning and support students who are in need of extra assistance or enrichment. Students will be issued individual logins at the beginning of the school year to access all of the valuable information contained on this site. Ask your child to give you a tour of this invaluable website!
