The event will feature student and professional performances and authentic Latin foods from a variety of Latin American counties and cultures.About fifteen percent of the school’s 718 students in Grades 6-12 are Latino. Principal Sasha Douglas said she is proud to be part of the event, explaining, “as a global and international studies magnet school, the CREC Metropolitan Learning Center greatly values the diversity of our student body. The Latino Heritage Festival is not only a celebration of Latino cultures, but an opportunity to educate our community about the richness of Latino cultures.” The Latino Heritage Festival will offer students an opportunity to perform Latin-inspired music, poetry, and dance. Their performances will be accompanied by a keynote presentation by Luz Marie Maldonado, a Metropolitan Learning Center alumna from the class of 2008. Maldonado currently holds the title of Ms. New England Belleza Latina. To round out the evening’s celebrations, students and guests will sample authentic Latin foods provided by various local vendors and representing a variety of Latin American cultures. For students at the CREC Metropolitan Learning Center, this is an important event. “This festival is an opportunity to show others what it means to be Latino,” shared Melanie Lima, a 9th grade student from Enfield. Lina McCann of Windsor is a 9th grader at the school. Said she that she valued the opportunity, because “this cultural event exposes non- Latino people to the rich history and culture of the Latino Culture.” The CREC Metropolitan Learning Center’s Second Annual Latino Heritage Festival will be held on Friday, October 25th from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm at 1551 Blue Hills Avenue in Bloomfield.
