To the Meadows Family
You talk to them every day. They assist you in so many ways! They are often in the forefront of care but are not always recognized for their endless work, diligence, and heart. Who are they? Nursing Assistants! Certified Nursing Assistants, or CNA’s, are the people who have special training and certification to care for our beloved residents. At The Meadows, they cover many aspects of care ranging from responding to pendants and taking care of personal assistance to helping with room upkeep and meal service. We are blessed to have such a strong group. It is no secret that the dedication and care of our CNA’s is what sets The Meadows apart from the rest.
Nursing Assistant’s Week is recognized this month
(June 18th-24th) join us in thanking this crucial part
of our staff for all they do!
Happy Birthday!

The Magnificent Ocean
June is “World Ocean Month”! What would our world be without the ocean? The ocean provides over half of the air we breathe. It covers 70% of the Earth, the ocean currents regulate the world’s climate and weather patterns. Although 95% of the ocean remains unexplored, it is home to over 2 million different species, including the largest animal ever to have existed.
The blue whale, capable of growing to almost 100 feet long and weighing in at 190 tons, is larger than any dinosaur that ever existed. This massive creature relies on one of the ocean’s smallest animals for its chief food source. The blue whale eats krill, tiny two-inch-long, shrimp-like creatures that swarm by the thousands. That the largest animal should rely on one of the smallest should not come as a surprise, for this is just another example of the great interdependence on each other for their survival. The diversity of life in our oceans is astounding.
The mystery of the ocean is in its vast depths. What is astounding is that the average depth of the ocean is over 13,000 feet deep. That’s as high as the peaks of the Rocky Mountains! So what mysteries lie at those uncharted depths? Scientists have discovered sea anemones and upside-down swimming fish under ice sheets, coral reefs off Greenland, and new varied creatures living in superheated waters near underwater sea vents. Who can ever explore all that the ocean has to offer?

The Meadows Parade
On May 6, we went outside for some fun. The weather could not have been better. We had snow cones, games, the police came, along with emt’s, fireman, reporters & so many more people surprised us. We had a parade! Why? So your family & friends could drive thru and see you. And you could see them as well. They decorated their cars with balloons & signs. What an exciting day!! Kona Ice hung around and served snow cones to everyone, compliments of Northwest Home Health, a huge thank you for making this happen! Thank you to all the residents for your participation, your people were so excited to see you! And to the staff for making sure everything happened (as it was planned in our heads) (! And to all the participants that took time out of your life to make it such a huge success & show everyone sooo much love!!

June Birthstones
June is one of only two months that has three birthstones associated with it, giving the lucky people born in June a choice of gemstones between pearl, alexandrite and moonstone.
June’s birthstones range from creamy-colored opalescent pearl and moonstone to the rare color-changing alexandrite—one of the most valuable gems on earth. With this spectrum of price points and color options, people with June birthdays can choose a beautiful gemstone to fit any mood or budget.
Long Road to Father’s Day
The first organized celebration of fathers occurred on July 5, 1908, in West Virginia, as a church sermon honoring a local man who died in a coal mine explosion. The next year, a woman from Spokane, Washington, who was raised by her widowed father rallied local organizations to support an official Father’s Day. The state of Washington celebrated the first official Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. By 1924, President Coolidge was calling for all states to declare Father’s Day a holiday, but many fathers did not support the movement.
Efforts were launched to do away with both Mother’s and Father’s Day, and simply celebrate Parents’ Day. The National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day was organized in 1938. This council was a group of retailers from NYC. During World War II, Father’s Day was promoted as an honor to our fighting fathers. It was not until 1972, that President Nixon declared the third Sunday in June Father’s Day. Today, almost every country in the world celebrates a holiday honoring fatherhood.
While the rest of the world was celebrating New Years Eve in 1928, Vera & Leslie Bremner were being blessing with a beautiful baby girl. In middle of farm country of Midwestern Iowa, Mary Lee was born in Denison. She was raised there on that family farm as an only child by her parents. Mary was a daddy’s girl, as she was an only child. Some of her most treasured childhood memories are on the family farm with her dad, riding on the tractor working the garden or plowing the fields.
Mary would finish school & marry Ken Myer; they would have 2 children, Kay & Jim. Mary & Ken were married for 39 years and also lived on many farms. While farming and working they both enrolled in college and took classes every chance they got. They both graduated from college while working & farming, not to mention raising the kids! They had many family vacations; they traveled out west mainly but ventured into Canada at times. They were very proud of the tent camper they had at the time.
After the kids were grown, Ken was very active in a men’s organization & that gave him the opportunity to travel to Australia, where they got to enjoy the Australian culture for 2 weeks. Mary recalls enjoying several other vacations with that organization.
Mary would later remarry to a wonderful man, Dewitt Hay. Soon after their marriage, Dewitt would fall ill & they would receive the news he had less than a year to live. Dewitt would prove the medical field wrong! Mary & Dewitt had a beautiful 12 year marriage!
Chatting with Mary, I learned this….Mary is a night owl, she prefers steak over pizza & she’ll take it rare please. Mary’s thought to me….. Looking back on how your life started, don’t ever be surprised how it ends…..just hang on. We love having Mary here, always a pleasure to visit with.

June 14 is Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the American flag in 1777. Known as “Old Glory,” “Stars and Stripes,” and “Star-Spangled Banner,” the flag has 13 equal horizontal stripes, alternating red and white, symbolizing the original 13 colonies. The canton, the rectangle in the upper left-hand corner, is blue with 50 white stars, representing the 50 states. Throughout America’s history, there have been 39 different flag designs, with the stars changing each time a state was added to the Union. Canton designs, before the 48-star flag, had no official arrangement of the stars. Sometimes they were in a circular pattern and other times in the pattern of a star. This holiday was first proposed by a school teacher in 1885 and later recognized as a national holiday by President Truman in 1949. Throughout this week, we are encouraged to proudly hang an American flag as a sign of respect to our country. Since 1777, one thing hasn’t changed: the American flag has always stood for freedom.
