Report to ICSAThe Corinthian Yacht Club, together with Boston College and MIT, is excited to host the 2019 ICSA Match Race National Championship in Marblehead November 1-3, 2019. The report below summarizes the status of the event planning along with other relevant details. Key Event PersonnelEvent personnel have been fully secured and include the following:Event Chair – Joe Fava (CYC Member and Sailing Committee Chair)ICSA Representative – Greg Wilkinson (Boston College Head Coach)MIT Representative – Matt Lindblad (MIT Head Coach)Principal Race Officer – Bill Canfield (CYC Member and Experienced PRO)Race Committee Personnel – Race committee team has been fully identified and comprised of members who have run the prior NEISA Championships in 2017 and 2018.Chief Umpire – Steve Wrigley – International UmpireUmpire team: John Pratt – IU, Greg Kiely – IU, Kathy Lindgren – IU, Charlie Arms (F) – IU, Bruce Cook – IU, John Tagleamonte – NU, Lance Smotherman – NU, Bill Simon – NU, Rick ( Doc ) Sullivan – NUKey Event AssetsSonar Sailboats – The Corinthian, Eastern, Boston and Pleon Yacht Clubs will provide 11 Sonars for the event. These Sonars are currently undergoing a refurbishment effort standardizing rigging and systems. To date, cordage and control bar placement has been standardized. Phase II is underway to standardize remaining systems including traveler and main sheet placement. Sails to be utilized are our Marblehead Harbor team race sails. These are a consistent colored set all made by Doyle with three seasons of use on them. Spinnakers are all also made by Doyle of the same design/cut. These are the sonars used in the 2017 and 2018 NEISA Match Race Championship as well as the boats used for the Jackson Cup, Halloween Team Race and Corinthian Yacht Club 2v2 Team Race.Race Committee Boats – All needed race committee boats have been secured including our signal, mark, bosun and floater boats. We are grateful for support received from the Eastern Yacht Club in using some of their Race Committee assets for the event.Umpire boats – All needed umpire boats have been secured including a backup umpire boat should there be an unexpected engine issue.Coaching platform – The coaching platform will be the Corinthian Yacht Club traditional race committee boat, Pegasus. Pegasus is a 45 foot custom lobster boat-like vessel and provides shelter for coaches from the rain and wind, along with a place for gear storage for petitor and umpire flags – The needed flags for umpires and competitors have been agreed with Chief Umpire Steve Wrigley and ICSA Representative Greg Wilkinson. All flags are currently in possession of the Corinthian, with the exception of ‘Y’ flags, which are being ordered. We do not expect competitors or umpires to need to bring any flags to the event.HousingCompetitors – This is important. Given the proximity of the event to Halloween, we do not expect there to be available hotels in Salem, nor would we suggest staying in Salem because of Halloween. To this end, approximately 20 rooms have been blocked for the regatta at the Corinthian and Eastern Yacht Clubs (two minute drive to CYC). These rooms are on the upstairs floors of the yacht clubs and have a variety of room arrangements (some are suites, some shared baths etc.) These will be held until October 15, 2019. It is inappropriate for teams to reserve these rooms until they have qualified. Rates range from $150-$300/night.Marblehead also has several bed and breakfast options including the Seagull Inn and The Marblehead Hotel. While National hotel chain hotels are available north of Marblehead in Peabody and Danvers Massachusetts, we advise against staying in these hotels as travel to the Corinthian requires driving through Salem and should be avoided around Halloween. If you wish to stay in a hotel, we suggest staying south of Marblehead and consider the hotels near Logan Airport in Revere.Umpires – We are working to secure housing for all umpires with CYC members who live on Marblehead Neck.Sailing AreaMarblehead Harbor will be free of boats providing the event the opportunity to utilize the harbor itself and the area at the mouth of the harbor as the sailing area for the event. This provides a very short sail for competitors to the sailing area. Events including the Jackson Cup and Halloween Team Race are sailed in the harbor annually while the 2017 and 2018 NEISA Match Race Championship were sailed at the mouth of the harbor.1710372932498Sailing Area00Sailing Area312420015144750037338001657350Corinthian Yacht ClubCorinthian Yacht ClubUse of the Corinthian Yacht ClubThe club is very excited to host this event and intends to provide full access to all amenities to the college sailors, their coaches, parents, athletic staff and alumni. These groups are welcome to use the club for meals or events. Reservations for meals can be made through the club front desk. Should teams wish to have events, such as an alumni reception, this can be arranged through the CYC General Manager David Titus (dtitus@).Open points for ICSAWe are working to assess the feasibility of doing a live stream to broadcast the sailing using equipment from the MIT Media Lab (its head is a CYC Member). Support from ICSA to identify individuals who may be willing to commentate during the event would be welcomed.Sponsors - The club would welcome a title sponsor. We note that the other college nationals do have a sponsor – a title sponsor would allow the event to engage a professional level commentator. We understand that ICSA will provide all trophies for the event. Please confirm this, along with their delivery process to the event chair.Next stepsKey next steps include finalization of notice of race and sailing instructions. ................
