Children learn to read in many ways:
• Seeing others read: Children need to see reading and writing all around them.
• Being read to: A print-rich environment makes them want to read too.
• Seeing others write.
• Having someone write for them.
• Figuring out print for themselves.
Here are some ways to encourage your baby’s language development:
• Talk to your baby.
• Use repetitious sounds in talking to your baby.
• Talk about what is happening during diapering and feeding routines.
• Play language games with your baby, such as:
• “Peek-a-boo”
• “Where is your nose, tummy, etc.”
• “This Little Pig”
• Expose your baby to adult conversations.
• Read to your baby.
