How to Create and Manage Breakout Rooms in Microsoft Teams

?How to Create and Manage Breakout Rooms in Microsoft TeamsAfter creating a Teams site for your course, Navigate to your class icon?in Teams?and click the three dots in the top right of the box.?Select the add channel option.Next, give the new channel a name, a description (if necessary), and a privacy setting.Uses of different privacy settings: -Standard: This will make the channel accessible for everyone in the class and will be an easier choice to manage for small groups that will be rotating/switching with partners. -Private: This option will make the channel only available to students who you grant access to. If you choose Private, then you will need enter the names of the students will have access to this channel. In addition, the option to Schedule a Meeting does not work in a Private Channel, you will have to use the Meet Now button or Paste a Meeting Link option. Repeat this process until you have as many different channels as you will need to accommodate your students and assignments. Your students can join the breakout sessions in 2 ways. The first way is to use the MEET NOW button that is in each channel. This button starts a meeting at any time and puts everyone into that same group. There is only one downfall with this button and that is that i-Pad users do not have this option in their Teams app. So, if you wish to use the MEET NOW button then please make that note to students beforehand so they know to use their laptops. If you do not want to have that issue, then please follow the next steps to create unique meeting links for each channel. Below will be instructions on how to either Schedule a Teams Meeting or Post a unique Teams Link in each Channel OPTION 1: Scheduling a Teams Meeting in Each Channel You can schedule a reoccurring meeting that also coincides with Class time that students can join. This meeting can be joined outside of the scheduled times as well.In the upper right-hand corner of the channel select the drop-down arrow next to the Meet button and then select Schedule a Meeting. You can then go through the steps of giving the meeting a Title, setting the date and time, and how often the meeting will be occurring. When you are done you can select SEND in the upper right-hand corner. The meeting for the individual Break-Out Room is now in the Posts section at the bottom and can be joined by selecting the Purple Rectangle that says the Title of the meeting. After you have successfully completed this, repeat the process for all the remaining channels until they all have their own video chat link.OPTION 2: Adding Unique Links into Each ChannelTo insert a video chat link into each channel start by navigating to your Microsoft Calendar App on Outlook, not the calendar in Microsoft Stream. Select the “New Event” button.Give the event a title, in this example “Group A Chat Room” was used. Be sure to click the button to the right of the location selection area, switching the event to a “Teams Meeting”. It does not matter how long you schedule the meeting for or what day you schedule it on. This will simply be used as a link for video chatting that will be posted into the student’s channel or “breakout room”.So now we need to post the link into the channel. Navigate to your calendar where you will see the event, double click it. After that, you will be brought to a window with the link and call-in information for the meeting. Highlight the full link at the bottom of the box the teams meeting. After you have highlighted and copied the link, navigate into the specific channel that you made it for, paste it into the chat box, and send it.After you have successfully completed this, repeat the process for all the remaining channels until they all have their own video chat link. Now your students will be able to utilize small group activities and discussions simply by clicking the link in the chat. You also will not have to create a new chat link, as this link will bring them all to the same place each time. Lastly, you, as the instructor, will also be able to enter the different groups to check in on how the students are doing and answer their individual questions. You can only participate in one meeting at a time and the others that you are in will be on hold. To navigate to the different meetings that you have already entered you can easily hang up on one and join another or if you are using the Web Version of Teams you will see a list of all the meetings you have joined and click play on which one you want to jump back into. ................
