Jonathan AlvaradoStreet LawDay 9 – Criminal Law Lesson PlanGoalsIt is the goal of this lesson to continue the subject of criminal law by explaining the investigative process that lead up to an arrest, specifically the interrogation process and the 5th amendment. Methodology and Timing Begin class by going over Current Events and showing Colbert video. Ask for 6 new volunteers to talk about how they would respond to racial profiling. Explain where we are moving in the class, how this part of the unit encompasses the legal proceedings behind the investigation phase. Today specifically being the interrogation process and the 5th amendment. Get into substantive discussion about interviews and the right to remain silent. Show videos of famous people taking the 5th. Show video of the wire and how those investigators likely broke the law. Ask the students if there silence can ever be used against them. Explain that it can be used against them under the case Salinas. That is, unless they first assert their 5th amendment right to silence. With remaining time, go over the 2nd half of a mock trial round and what the students should expect next semester. Materials Note HandoutsPowerpointYoutubeDebate materials EvaluationToday went a little faster than expected. I had several videos to show them and I guess I thought those would take up more time but they didn’t. Ultimately it was fine because we had a good amount of time to talk about the procedure of mock trial round.. ................
