English 11

Million Dollar Speech Name____________________

You--yes, you-- have just won one million tax-free dollars! Your assignment is to search the Internet, newspapers, and/or catalogs to spend every single penny of that money! You need to keep a list of what you bought, details describing each item, and record how much each item costs. Your grand total must be $1,000,000! (You can donate any leftover odd amount to your English teacher!) Finally, in the end, you must write an outline about what you bought. Then you will tell the class what you purchased with your money.

The purpose of this assignment is to spark your creativity, have fun in English (like always), practice your researching skills, practice your technology skills, and practice your outlining and speaking skills. (You'll also be practicing your math skills!)

First, keep a list of what you bought, a great description of it, and how much it cost. Copy one picture of each item. You will make a PowerPoint showing your purchases for a visual aid during your speech. Once you've spent the money, turn it all into an outline. You must spend the money on at least three things. (Start a new heading whenever you switch topics.) Your speech should be at least 2 minutes.

Example:

Thesis: One sentence that tells the audience about the purpose of your speech. Your thesis should also be a part of your introduction.

Introduction: Write in complete sentences. Be sure to include your thesis at the end of your introduction. Start with questions, a little story, an inspiring quote, etc.

I. Item One

A. Price

B. Description

1. Square footage

2. Number of bedrooms

3. Number of bathrooms

II. Item Two

A. Price

B. Description

III. Item Three

Conclusion: Again, remember to write in complete sentences. Think about the circle and come back to the information you stated in your introduction.

Keep going with your outline. Whenever you have a 1, you must have a 2; whenever you have an A, you must have a B.

You need at least one picture on your PowerPoint

Your speech should be at least 2 minutes long.
