H.R. No. 554

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Harriet Griffin has long been a leader in her community, first as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in the Fort Worth Independent School District (ISD) and now as an advocate for the senior citizens of Texas, and her significant efforts are most deserving of special legislative recognition; and

WHEREAS, During her more than 30-year tenure with the Fort Worth ISD, this distinguished educator helped generations of Texans in their academic pursuits, equipping our future leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary for a lifetime of success; she retired in 1976 as the director of professional relations for the district and has since given generously of her time and many talents to benefit a host of worthwhile organizations; and

WHEREAS, Well known as a spokesperson for the AARP's Women's Initiative, Ms. Griffin has dedicated herself to improving the quality of life for the elderly and all citizens in the Fort Worth area; the current chairwoman of the Tarrant County Commission on Aging, she has participated in numerous organizations, including the Citizens Advisory Council of the Texas Department on Aging, the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council, the American Cancer Society, the Sickle Cell Anemia Association, Meals on Wheels, Inc., and the Mental Health Association; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Griffin has drawn upon her diverse experiences to promote the concerns and issues facing older Americans on the national and state levels as a delegate to the 1981 and 1993 White House conferences on aging and as a member of the State Committee on Long-Term Care for the Elderly; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed individual has earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues and many friends and has been honored by a host of prestigious groups; the Fort Worth ISD Distinguished Alumnus Award, the Lone Star Business and Professional Women's Club Sarah T. Hughes Award, the Trail Blazer Award by the Texas Joint Conference on Aging, and the Outstanding Citizen for Seniors Award from Senior Citizen Services of Greater Tarrant County, Inc., are among her many accolades; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Griffin is a woman of integrity and tremendous compassion, and it is a privilege to honor her hard work and dedication at this time; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas Legislature hereby commend Harriet Griffin for her many years of civic leadership and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all her future endeavors; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Griffin as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
