What things help decide if you can get SNAP Food Stamps?

DHS (Department of Human Services) looks at 4 things:

? How many people are in your household ? How much income you get ? If you own certain things that could be sold to

buy food ? What bills you must pay

1. Household Size

A household is everyone that lives in the same place and buys and fixes food together. What if 2 people live together but don't buy and cook food together? They can each be their own household. Are you are age 21 or less and live with your parents? Then you can't be your own household. This is true even if you buy and fix your own food.

2. Income

What does DHS count as income? DHS counts income from a job, your own business, unemployment pay, worker's comp, child support, pensions, Social Security, and SSI.

Is your income higher than this? Then you can't get SNAP Food Stamps.

3. Resources

Resources are what DHS calls money or things you could sell to buy food. You can have up to $2,250 in resources. If you are elderly or disabled, you can have up to $3,250. If you have too many resources, you can't get SNAP Food Stamps. Your home, car, and belongings don't count as a resource.

What does DHS count as a resource?

? Cash you have left over after you paid all your monthly bills

? Money in your checking accounts left over after you paid all your monthly bills

? Savings accounts ? Tax refunds, but not the Earned Income

4. What can get you more SNAP Food Stamps?

Costs you must pay, like rent, are called deductions. Most of the time, the more deductions you have, the more SNAP Food Stamps you get.

What things count as deductions?

? Rent or house payments ? Child support you pay ? Day care or baby-sitting costs ? 20% of what you earn ? Light or electric bill ? Water and sewer bill ? Gas bill IF you use gas to cook or heat your

house ? Phone bill ? Garbage pick-up fees ? Property tax or insurance on house or

apartment ? Over 60 or disabled? You can count a lot of

your medical costs. Tell your worker if you have any medical or drug costs. Also tell your worker how many miles you travel to get medical care. This means to and from the doctor, drug store, hospital and anywhere you get medical care. See our booklet "Food Stamps and Medical Costs."
