Cell Division Vocabulary:Chapter 3, Section 5Cell Cycle- the regular sequence of growth and division that cells undergo. Interphase- the first stage of the cell cycle. Interphase is the period before cell division. During interphase, the cell grows, makes a copy of its DNA, and prepares to divide into two cells. Replication- the part of interphase where a cell makes an exact copy of the DNA in the nucleus. Mitosis- the stage during which the cell’s nucleus divides into two new nuclei. During mitosis, one copy of DNA is distributed into each of the two daughter cells. Chromosomes- a doubled rod of condensed chromatin-contains DNA in the nucleus. Cytokinesis- the final stage of the cell cycle. During cytokinesis, the cytoplasm divides, and the organelles are distributed into each of the two new daughter cells. Asexual Reproduction- a reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent. Sexual Reproduction- a reproductive process that involves two parents that combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents. ................
