Build a Machine: Create an Invention Conference

You have now explored the six simple machines and observed them in your school, at home, and in the community. Now it is your turn to build a simple machine. You will soon be participating in an Invention Conference. You will follow the project steps/checklist listed on the pages that follow to invent a new product or develop a new way of completing a task.

We will begin by discussing existing inventions and their inventors. This will allow you to gain an appreciation for the design thinking/invention process.

It is necessary to first find an idea for an invention. You may want to ask an adult if they have a need for a new product or if they require a new method to solve a problem or lessen their workload.

Once an idea has been established, research is necessary to ensure that the idea has not already been invented. In other words, does your invention already exist? If so, how will yours be different from the original? An Invention Declaration form will also be completed. After approval has been given, you may begin to create your invention.

During the actual process of inventing/building, you will need to remember that all inventors must reflect upon their initial design and modify/re-build along the way. You will be responsible for writing a short reflection each day about what you accomplished and what you feel your next steps should be in the invention building process.

Once the invention has been assembled, a Patent Application will need to be completed. Having a patent helps to ensure that inventors own the rights to their creations.

Finally, you will share your invention with the world (your classmates, parents, and possibly other classes from your school) during an Invention Conference on

Invention Conference Project Checklist

Use the following checklist to keep track of the steps within the Invention Conference project that you have completed. Make sure that all steps are completed before the Invention Conference sharing day.

I have:

Step 1: Brainstormed invention ideas. Step 2: Completed the invention planning sheet. Step 3: Drawn a blueprint of my invention and provided an

explanation of how simple machines will be utilized. Step 4: Filled out the Invention Declaration form. Step 5: Completed one invention learning log reflection each

day that I built my project. Step 6: Completed the Canadian Patent Application. Step 7: Self-assessed my project using the self-reflection

rubric. Step 8: Shared my project during the Invention Conference.

Step 1: Brainstorming Invention Ideas

The following list of invention ideas are to be used to motivate and encourage young inventors.

A new bird feeder. A new container. A new pencil case. A new clothing design. A new cleaning tool. A new toy. A new board game. A new book bag. A new musical instrument. A new product for pets. A method of keeping drinks

cold. A new use for household

items.

My Invention Brainstorming Ideas:

A new way of organizing pencils.

A new way to remember things.

A way to prevent spills. A new robot. A new garbage collection

method. A method of cleaning your

room. A method of scraping dirty

dish plates. A new toothbrush holder. A new cellphone case

holder.

Step 2: Invention Planning

Successful inventions are ones that make improvements to existing products, solve problems or meet a specific need. Make a list of improvements that would help your community, school, or home. Use this list to help you decide on an invention topic. Improvements, problem or need for my invention: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Simple machines that my invention will utilize (briefly list): ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Materials required: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Invention description: ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
