Body Composition Measurement

With the rise in obesity in this country, it is becoming increasingly important to determine body composition so that appropriate weight goals can be determined.

There are many ways to assess body composition. One popular way is by measuring Body Mass Index (BMI), which is simply a height/weight ratio. It is the most common method used by physicians and is easily calculated. One downside to this method is that it does not assess lean weight versus fat mass. So, an elite athlete might be deemed “overweight” on a BMI scale even though he/she might be very lean.

The most accurate way to determine body composition is by measuring percent of body fat. For good health and regardless of body type, men should be less than 25% body fat and women should be less than 31%.

During your confidential 10-minute appointment, you will meet 1:1 with an Exercise Physiologist to have your height, weight, body mass index and body fat measured. Body fat will be measured using a hand-held, bio-impedance body fat analyzer. This method is quick, accurate, and painless. No pinching is necessary! Based on the results, appropriate weight goals will be discussed.
