Course Description:

This course provides students the opportunity to learn about and participate in a variety of athletic and fitness activities in a safe environment. Fostering positive attitudes concerning a healthy lifestyle is an essential goal. By providing a variety of activities for participation, practice and learning, this experience assists in developing the basic skill in selected team sports and fitness exercises. This promotes the likelihood of continued participation in physical activity and establishes healthy habits which promote overall wellness. This course will provide students the opportunity to apply skills, rules, and strategies to activities. This class will develop appropriate attitudes concerning losing and winning as well as acceptable social and emotional behavior. This course will also go into the many positive life skills that participation in team sports and fitness activity can help to develop and how they relate to future accomplishments. The 9th grade students will be exposed to a variety of topics such as responsibility and respect, school spirit and involvement, and how leadership and teamwork apply to all aspects of life.

Course Objectives:

Students will:

✓ Explain and/or demonstrate the rules and terminology of selected team sports.

✓ Demonstrate safety practices for all physical activities including proper warm-up and cool-downs.

✓ Participate in a variety of activities that will improve skill and health-related physical fitness.

✓ Apply and demonstrate fundamental skills, techniques and strategies in selected team sports.

✓ Identify available community resources providing opportunities for participation in sports, fitness or other physical activity.

✓ Demonstrate a positive attitude toward team sports and fitness activities as a lifetime activity.

✓ Learn about, show appreciation and support for participation in school related extra-curricular activities.

CLASS REQUIREMENRNTS:

Students’ grade will be determined by:

✓ Dressing out for fitness activities

✓ Written tests, quizzes, and a mid-term and/or final exam.

✓ Physical fitness tests / evaluations.

✓ Notebook/Chapter Worksheet /Exercise Logs/Home Learning.

✓ Participation in Classroom and Field Activities.

✓ Effort and Improvement

DRESSING OUT RULES:

All students are required to dress out in a Ferguson P.E. uniform or appropriate athletic attire when completing any fitness assignments. If you have a Ferguson PE uniform from last year, you may wear it.

The only acceptable uniform consists of:

✓ Black gym shorts.

✓ Ferguson PE shirt, plain gray or plain white T-shirt.

✓ Athletic shoes and socks. NO CROCS, SPERRY’S, SANDALS, SLIPPERS, TOMS, ETC…

✓ A towel, water bottle, sun-screen, and deodorant are strongly recommended

✓ HOODIES, JACKETS, BLANKETS, LEGGINS, TANK TOPS & SWEATPANTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN PE.

THE GRADING SCALE:

A: T-shirt, shorts & sneakers

C: ½ dress = any other color on either top / bottom

D: Altered clothes (cut sleeves)

F: NO DRESS / Wrong shoes / 2 ½ dresses

VIDEO CONFERENCE / ZOOM MEETINGS:

✓ Please join class 5 minutes before start time to sort any computer issues that may arise

✓ Your camera must be on for attendance and remain muted until instructed otherwise.

✓ Wear the appropriate uniform & be ready for class.

✓ Be attentive and respectful

✓ Your first name and last name must be on your screen. No nicknames.

PICTURES / VIDEOS:

✓ If pictures and/or videos are required for an assignment, please follow the dressing out rules.

✓ If you are not in uniform, you will automatically receive an F for the assignment.

✓ Do NOT include any filters or emojis.

Make-Ups:

If you miss an assignment or work-out and you have an excused admit, you are required to make-up the work within 1 week of absent date. Failing to complete a make-up assignment will result in an F for that day/assignment.

ATTENDANCE:

✓ 3 unexcused absences in 18 weeks may result in “NO CREDIT” for the course.

✓ Be aware that if you are absent on block-schedule days each absence counts as two ( 2 ) days.

✓ Students are expected to request make-up work after and EXCUSED absence. Arrangements to make-up a test and other work missed because of an excused absence must be made upon the student’s return.

✓ Unexcused absences will result in failing grades for every assignment missed.

✓ In case of indoor/outdoor suspension, it is the student’s responsibility to request make-up work, complete it, and have it ready to turn-in upon their return to class.

Supplies:

✓ 1 Duo-tang folder

✓ Notebook paper.

✓ Pen/pencil

Home Learning

All home learning assignments are to be turned in, in a timely manner. The homework assignments include locating and interpreting fitness or health related fitness articles and other reading and research activities that will require you to read at least 30 minutes on a DAILY basis.
