Introduction

You have landed an interview for a job with a prominent Madison Ave advertising agency. For the interview they want to see a sample of what you can do and ask you to make up a mock car commercial of your favorite car.

Task

Your task is to develop a 30 second mock car commercial utilizing Garageband. Your Commercial should include pictures of your favorite car, a narrated script, commercial jingle, and sound effects.

Process

After the teacher introduces Garageband to you, go through the following steps to complete your project. If you have any questions or problems, ask the teacher for Help.

Step 1: Open Safari - Download several pictures of your favorite car to the iPhoto library on your laptop. The best place to start would be a Google image search. When you find a picture you want to use, go to the actual web site to download the image. DO NOT download the image from Google the resolution will not be good. To Download an image into the iPhoto library, place your cursor over the image, hold down the “ctrl” key on your keyboard and choose “add image to iPhoto library”.

[pic]

Step 2: Once you have downloaded all the images you want, open up iPhoto and create a new album with the name of your car. Drag all of the pictures you want to use into this folder from the iPhoto library.

[pic] [pic]

Step 3: After you have completed step 2, quit iPhoto and open up Garageband. Choose “New” under the “File” menu. Choose “New Podcast Episode”. Save the file in your folder as carcommercial with your name in the front (see picture below)

[pic]

On the right-hand side of the arrange window you should see your media browser. Click on Photos if it is not already chosen and click on your car’s folder. Click and drag the pictures in the order you want them to be displayed to the podcast track.

[pic]

Step 4: After you have gotten all of your photos into the podcast track, make sure the purple triangle on the timeline is placed at 00:30 seconds.

[pic]

Step 5: To add a jingle to your commercial, use one of the standard jingles found within garageband. Click on the EYE icon at the bottom left-hand side of the Garageband window and choose “Jingles” from the menu. Jingles exist in three different forms, Short, medium and Long.

[pic]

Drag your favorite jingle to the jingles track.

Step 6: You can also add sound effects to your commercial by choosing the sound effects from the loops menu. There are 19 transportation sound effects. Choose one or two and click and drag them into the “Radio Sounds” track.

[pic]

Step 7: It is now time to create and record the script for your commercial. Go back and look at some of the web sites where you found pictures of your car, look for any technical information you can use and create your script. Write the script down on a piece of paper and revise it until you have exactly what you want. To record your script into Garageband, select the “Male Voice” track and click the record button.

(You may delete the female voice track)

Hint: Make sure that the jingles track and Radio Sounds track are on mute so that you don’t hear them on the recording of your script.

[pic] [pic]

Step 8: After you have recorded your script you may experiment with altering the sound of your voice by choosing different effects within the track info window. To access this window if it is not showing, make sure the Male Voice track is selected and click on the button shown below which is located at the bottom right of your Garageband window.

Step 9: After you have completed your Podcast. Send it to iTunes under the Share menu at the top of the screen. Play it in iTunes.
