SLIDE and DIVIDE METHOD
Factoring Trinomials
(Leading Coefficient Not Equal To 1)
Use this method to factor a trinomial in the form of [pic]when “a” does not equal 1.
Steps: Example: [pic]
1. Multiply leading coefficient and constant. [pic]
2. Rewrite trinomial without leading coefficient and [pic] replace constant with product from step #1.
3. Factor trinomial in Step #2. [pic]
4. DIVIDE the last term in each binomial with [pic]
the dropped coefficient.
5. Reduce the fractions, if possible. [pic]
6. For fractions that remain, “SLIDE” the denominator [pic]
in front of the first term in the binomial. [pic]
7. The trinomial is now factored. Answer: [pic]
Try These:
1. 3x2 + 13x – 10 2. 5x2 + 21x + 4
3. 4x2 – 5x – 6 4. 12x3 + 52x2 + 16x
