14:00 TERRY PRATCHETT TRIBUTE – Jessica Yates: At the 2016 Discworld Convention near Warwick, in keeping with the location I spoke about Terry Pratchett's admiration for and allusions to the works of Warwickshire's two greatest writers, Tolkien and Shakespeare. Towards the end of this talk I hope to analyse the allusions to certain other writers in Terry's final Discworld novels for adults, Snuff and Raising Steam. I also hope to find a special meaning for "Redemption" and to discover one of our favourite actors performing in three Pratchett-related roles

16:00: VILLAINS AS LIBERATORS - This is about the genre of "Dark Het," mostly, from a feminist perspective. The Phantom of the Opera, Loki, Jareth, Jaffar--all of these male characters, so loved by fangirls, are all coded as The Other--they are different masculinities and at times coded female and/or queer. Fanficcers have, for a long time, known how liberating it is to write het about these types of characters, and how to write un-heteronormative, liberating, egalitarian relationships with them.
