2019Week 1, Grades 1-2 – Science of our Solar System:Does your child love science and wish they had the chance to learn more than they currently do? Week 1 of SCOPE is fully devoted to science. Students will have the opportunity to learn all about Space. Science will come alive as students create their own model of the solar system. Students will learn the order of the planets, discuss the phases of the moon with OREOS, and even make their own galaxy slime; and that’s just a few of the many activities planned. Students will come home singing songs about the planets and be excited to share their new wealth of knowledge learned through the many experiments, art projects and other activities they created during Week 1. This is not your average science class. Creativity will come alive this week. Week 2, Grades 1-2—Wonderful Weather:Does your child enjoy learning about weather? Has your child asked questions like where does lightning come from? How do tornadoes form? Why do the clouds look different before it storms? During Week 2 of SCOPE, students will discover all this and more when they learn about the different types of weather. Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Thunderstorms, and Blizzards are a few of the main topics that will be covered during Week 2. Learning will come alive through creation. Students will have the chance to make tornadoes in a jar, research and demonstrate knowledge through the creation of interactive weather lap books, flip books, and even their own rain clouds. This week will be full of many great science projects that will make your child beg to be the next meteorologist. Students will discover all the different habitats where animals live. We will read books about the various habitats, sing habitat songs, write habitat reports, and create habitat dioramas and much more. Each day will consist of a new habitat, with fun and engaging projects. Watch out, Miss Frizzle. The fun is not over yet! Trust me---you don’t want to miss it! Grades 3-10, see specific grade levels at each definitionBal-A-Vis-X, Beginning/Intro (grades 3-5) – Students practice patterns, right/left brain connections along with individual, partner and group collaboration while using racquetballs. Become a SCOPE Reporter (grades 6-10) – Each group of students will pick a topic and interview other students, teachers and other staff. Pictures will be taken and a 1-page newspaper will be the final result.Beginning EV3 Robotics (grades 3-10) – Are you interested in learning to build and program LEGO robots? This class will teach you the basics of LEGO EV3 robotics while helping you understand how robots work. Beginner's Sewing (grades 5-10) – Students will learn the basics of sewing, including how to thread a needle, two types of stitches, and how to sew on a button. They will create a variety of handmade items using felt. Board Game Design (grades 3-5 or grades 6-10) – Every board game, from Monopoly to Ticket to Ride, has a designer behind it. Now is your chance to create your own game. Plan, design, and even create a prototype for the next board game sensation. Use other board games as a source of inspiration, or create something completely original.Board Games (grades 3-5 or grades 3-8)?– Board games that involve strategy and critical thinking skills will be available for students to learn and play. Games included: Mancala, Stratego!, Q-Bitz, Othello, Checkers, 500+ piece puzzles, and more.Break it - Make It (grades 5-10) – Use broken dishes and chinaware to repurpose an existing item into a new and unique piece of art. Examples include clay flower pot, wooden frame, wooden cutout shapes.Breakfast Creations (grades 4-6) – Each day we will take ordinary breakfast foods and jazz them up with cute and creative ideas!Card Making Class (grades 5-7) – Make a set of decorative stationery cards using rubber stamp techniques by embossing and embellishing their designs using inks and embossing powders.Chess, Beginning (grades 3-6) – Learn the world’s greatest strategy game. Participants will learn how to play CHESS: set up a board, how the piece moves, strategies, the three phases of the game, and the objective - placing an opponent in checkmate. We will have practice games and play a tournament against similar skill-level opponents.Chess, Intermediate (grades 4-10) – Participants will practice their CHESS strategies against other tacticians playing the greatest strategy game on Earth. We will have competitions and tournaments of CHESS. There will be a tournament utilizing brackets with a double-elimination format as participants compete to win the SCOPE WEEKLY CHESS TOURNAMENT.Chopped Jr. (grades 6-10) – Split into teams and compete daily to win the title of Chopped Jr. Champions!Codemaking and Codebreaking (grades 3-5 or grades 6-10) – Take a stab at cryptography: the art of writing or solving codes. Learn about some of the most famous codes and codebreakers. Decrypt secret messages and write your own. Prove that no code is too hard to crack!Create Your Own Number System (grades 4-6) – Explore ancient number systems (Mayan, Babylonian, Egyptian, Roman) by comparing and contrasting them. Learn about what components a number system needs to have to be functional, then create your own number system (including inventing new number symbols and an explanation of the civilization that would use this new number system).Creative Cookies (grades 3-10) – Put your creative juices to work and craft a plethora of delicious morsels! Designer Donuts (grades 3-10) – fried, raised and cake. How will you design your donuts?Don’t Play With Your Food (grades 4-6) – Why not? We are going to have some fun and create some amazing dishes that are photo worthy.Duct Tape Projects (grades 5-10) – Create a wallet, a large tote bag, and a small tote bag out of duct tape. Directions will be provided in class.Fairy Tales on Trial (grades 6-10) – If you are interested in the justice system, come put your favorite fairy tales on trial! What crimes did they commit and what is a fair punishment? You can be the prosecution, defense, judge, or jury. Hands-on Science (grades 3-6) – Have you ever wanted to make magnetic slime or exploding sidewalk art? Or how about construct your own sand volcano or bottle rocket? If you answered yes, then come be a part of the potions lab during our crazy “MAD SCIENTIST” week!Harry Potter Crafts (grades 3-10) – We may not have received Hogwarts letters, but that won’t stop us from creating a variety of items from the wizarding world! Students will have fun creating wands, potions bottles, house bracelets, chocolate frogs, and much more.Intermediate EV3 Robotics (grades 6-10) –?For the skilled robotics engineer, come enjoy building your own courses and then programming your robot to run the course. You will spend time collaborating on how to best make a proper robotics course.?Is It In The Sauce (grades 3-10) – Create a pizza; you decide on the dough, the sauce, and the toppings.Jewelry Making (grades 3-10) – Necklaces, earrings, bracelets. This is your chance to try your hand at making beautiful accessories. Lateral Thinking Challenges / "Stories with Holes" (grades 3-5) – Students use questioning techniques and listening skills to work together to decipher word puzzles from a given scenario.Lego? EV3 Robotics (grades 3-10) – Build and program a robot to run a course at the end of the week.Logic Puzzles, Beginner (grades 3-6) – Have you ever wondered how people solve logic puzzles so quickly? Come learn the winning strategies to help solve those puzzles faster than you ever thought possible. This class is for students who have little knowledge on completing logic puzzles.Logic Puzzles, Intermediate/Advanced (grades 7-10) – Now that you have learned some winning strategies, test yourself to see what level you can reach.
