CAMPING TRIP PROJECT
Assume you are going on a back-packing trip. You need to select breakfast, lunch, and dinner for each of the days on the trail. Each of the foods has a certain weight and cost. Part A will get you started by having you follow a partially filled chart. You must type-in the number and type of each meal already picked that are shown for a 7 day trip. In Part B, you will be selecting your own meals for a 5 day trip.
Part A: 1) Type in the information as shown in the chart for a 7 day
trip.
2) When you are sure the information has been entered
correctly, then enter the formulas in the cells indicated by
****** to instruct the computer to perform the following
calculations:
- Total Weight: for each food item: Place a formula in each cell of this column to multiply the weight of the
food item by the quantity of that item.
- Total Cost: for each food item: Place a formula here to multiply the price of the item by the quantity of that item.
- Grand Total Weight: Place a formula here to figure
the weight of all the food you will be carrying.
(Sum of the Total Weight column)
- Grand Total Cost: Place a formula here to
figure total food cost for the trip.
(Sum of Total Cost column)
MAKE NOTE …You must eat 3 meals a day. You may not change any of these options or skip a meal. Those three meals will consist of 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 1 dinner. You must open a new spreadsheet and type this information in. When you finish this part, you must do the formulas. After the formulas, you must manipulate the numbers of each meal so that you do not exceed the allowed weight and allowed money spent.
Part B: This part is the “what if” approach to making decisions. Imagine that your camping trip is only 5 days long and that you have only $55.00 to spend on food and to balance things out in your backpack, you need to have as close to 10.5lbs of food as possible without going over 10.5lbs.
From the list of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner meals choose 3 meals a day (5 Breakfasts, 5 Lunches, and 5 Dinners). With all of this food, you cannot exceed 10.5lbs or spend more than $55.00! You cannot skip a meal -- you must keep up your energy on a trip like this. (Notice : the more expensive food weigh less!)
You should complete a spreadsheet that is identical to that in Chart A. This includes ALL of the formatting. A list of everything that will be graded is found on the grading sheet itself. Follow this closely. The only differences are the numbers entered in the Number column. The spreadsheet will calculate the cost and weight for your selection of meals.
REMEMBER: YOU NEED ENOUGH FOOD FOR 5 DAYS.
