Fractions Diagrams Version 2

USING DIAGRAMS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS INVOLVING FRACTIONS

(Thanks to Virginia Stimpson)

Now that you have solved and discussed one set of fraction problems by diagram, here is another batch to do in class.

• Work individually to draw diagrams to solve each of the following problems without doing any computations. Have your diagram represent the actual situation. Assess how well your diagram would help another person realize the answer to the problem simply by studying your work.

• Decide how you will work together as a small group. For instance, will you compare your diagrams after you have each worked a problem or will you pause after each person has finished four problems then compare those first four problems together?

• Take time to compare and understand each person's representation. Note when there are significant differences in the approach taken.
