[pic]Ocean Floor Model and Mapping [pic]

Background

The floor of the ocean is composed several land characteristics such as hills, plains, ridges, trenches and seamounts. Oceanographers have developed methods for mapping the ocean floor, illustrating what cannot be seen. Geologists and oceanographers use maps of the sea floor as tools for research and applied science (technology).

Objective

Students will develop a working knowledge of characteristics of the ocean floor by constructing a simulated model of the ocean floor in a shoebox. Note: The shoebox model will be used for a sonar mapping activity in class.

Materials

Required: Shoebox

Scissors

Grid paper

Possible: Clay

Paint

Play-doh (see the attachment for homemade recipe)

Paper maché (see the attachment for homemade recipe)

Cardboard rolls

Construction paper

Procedure

1. Define the terms: continent, continental shelf, continental slope, seamount, trench, and mid-ocean ridge.

2. Draw out a plan for your ocean floor that includes the above terms. (use the back of this sheet)

3. After your plan is completed, shape your planned ocean floor on the bottom of your shoebox. Note: Some materials require at least 24 hours to dry.

4. Glue or tape the attached grid paper to the top of the lid of your shoebox.

5. At the intersection of each row (A-G) and line (1-13) poke small holes in your shoebox lid using your scissors. The hole should be big enough for a small straw or chopstick to fit through.

Definitions (write the definitions for the aforementioned terms here.)
