Make My Own Lunch – Wed 20th March – Years 5 and 6
Make My Own Lunch ? Wed 20th March ? Years 5 and 6
7th March 2019
Dear Parents,
Years 3-6 will be participating in Elanora's unique Make My Own Healthy Lunch program which encourages students to prepare their own healthy food. A differentiated program is offered across the grades. The cost of $5 was included in school fees. Year 5 will be making a wrap or sandwich from the inviting fillings prepared by parents. Year 6 will be making a salad jar and healthy snack. Please return the note below indicating if your child has restricted dietary. Please discuss the follow-up home challenge and also indicate whether your child will participate ? we do hope you will take this opportunity to build healthy independence.
When: Wednesday 20th March 2019 What to bring: All send morning tea as usual, and bring an empty food packet with a label of ingredients such as protein, fat, sugar etc. Year 5 bring an empty lunchbox of a suitable size for the wrap. Year 6 bring a small container for the snack.
At school: the nutrition lesson and Make My Own Lunch buffet Each Year 5 and 6 class will participate in a nutrition lesson with Elanora parent and Home Economics teacher, Jody Seaton. They will review the different food groups in a balanced diet before looking at the many other choices they will face. How do you find out what's in your food? How do you interpret food labels? Why do they put so much fat, salt and sugar in processed food and drink? What are the health implications? Bring in packets from home to look at.
At home: follow-up Make My Own Lunch Challenge We hope you will also support the home follow-up Make My Own Lunch Challenge. Students record on a colourful card whenever they make their own healthy morning tea or lunch over the next fortnight. Mini-merits are awarded e.g. 1 mini-merit per two lunches, as well as yummy fruit kebabs for those who make 8 lunches. Of course, the real rewards are becoming more independent and developing eating habits which optimise lifelong health. Encourage your child to participate - it will also gradually lighten your load!
Thank you for your support, Jenny Cullen
