We play Monday to Saturday at 9 am and after January 23rd the tournament will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Draw for tournament teams will be on the morning of January 19th. Welcome to all and see you at the pits. I can be contacted at -

Bocce League

Sadly this past month Chuck Giannino passed away. Chuck was very much involved with the bocce league and spent many hours tending the courts. Our condolences to his family….he will be missed.

The Bocce League will begin the season on Monday, January 16th. All residents are welcomed and encouraged to join!

We welcome Tony Voislow to our bocce committee this season. Tony will be assisting Joel with the referee program. Welcome Tony!

All players must be in residence at Sapphire Lakes by the week of January 30th to qualify as team participants (the third week of play). After that date, they will be considered a substitute.

The Team Captains’ meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 11th at Pool #3 at 2:30 p.m. At this meeting the two “out of the hat” team members will be drawn by the Captains. Captains are responsible for collecting the entry fees of $10 (cash only please!) per team member. Funds are used for court maintenance, the purchase of umbrellas, prizes and other miscellaneous items.

Volunteers will again this season be in charge of court maintenance. Due to court maintenance, there can be no open play on either court after 11:30 a.m. daily, Monday to Friday during the bocce league season. Please respect this request.

A “new player” workshop will take place on Friday, January 13th at 11:30 a.m. on Court 1. All new players are welcome!

Anyone interested in refereeing this season is asked to contact Joel at jltapley@. The committee thanks all of our volunteers!

A copy of the schedule for each division will be provided to all team members. Anyone wishing a copy of the other three divisions may do so by contacting Ann Morrison at jamorrison62@ with “bocce schedule request” in the subject matter.

The play-off day will be Wednesday, March 8th (rain date March 9th or 10th) and the Super Bocce Game will be Wednesday, March 15th (rain date March 16th or 17th).

Please note there will be no changes to rain dates required for play-offs.

President’s Corner

I would like to welcome back all of our seasonal residents, and wish everyone a happy 2017, and another great winter season at Sapphire Lakes. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new owners and seasonal renters that are lucky enough to have found Sapphire Lakes. We hope you enjoy your time spent here and that you take advantage of all of the social activities that we have in our very active community.

The 2017 Master Budget was approved at the November 2016 Master Board meeting. The Board worked hard to keep the budget increase to less than one percent over last year’s budget. There are a few major changes in this year’s Master Budget. First is the new 10 year Comcast bulk services contract which for the first time will provide high speed Xfinity Internet for all 590 of our units for $30 per month once the installation of the new Fiber Optics is completed in the spring. The cost of the video portion of the Comcast bulk contract remains virtually the same as 2016, but once the fiber rebuild is completed each of the 590 units will receive four pieces of equipment: an X1 DVR box, a companion HD box, an HD-DTA converter and a Modem which contains a wireless router. Thus, on your private cable bill that most of you have been paying, you will no longer have to rent a modem, or pay a $10 “technology fee” or rent any DVRs or boxes. That change in your private cable bill will be reflected once our Fiber rebuild is completed. We believe that this contract will be extremely beneficial to our community in quality as well as cost. If you want to see all of the details of the contract enumerated, you can see them on the Sapphire Lakes website () and click on “President’s Corner” at the top of the Home page.

The second major change in the Master Budget is that the Master Reserve Funds have been reduced by about 50% with funds that were in the Reserves for the maintenance of carports, detached garages and driveways having been distributed to the 15 individual associations on a proportional basis. At their October 2016 meeting the Master Board also voted to amend the Master Documents to assign the maintenance and insurance responsibilities for carports, detached garages and driveways to the individual association that utilizes them.

The Wi Fi passwords have been changed at all four of the community pools. We are now receiving complimentary Wi Fi as a result of the new Comcast contract, so new Modems with wireless routers were installed in October. The new password at each pool is: sapphire. There is a notice to that effect on the bulletin board at each pool.

In Naples we experienced a very dry stretch of weather from the second week of October until the end of December, and our community’s irrigation system was severely tested to keep our beautiful landscaping green as we like it. Our landscaping contractor, Hampton Lawns, has worked tirelessly to maintain the property and the irrigation system up to our high expectations. I would ask that if you have an irrigation or landscaping problem that you either call Property Manager Karl Forsman (239-353-2465) or e-mail him sapphiremaster@ to resolve the issue. If that avenue is not successful, please notify your association president. Serious landscaping or irrigation issues will be addressed at the monthly Master Board meetings.

In closing, I wish you all a safe and happy 2017, as well as a terrific winter season in our beautiful community! Bob Foster, President

Treasurer’s Report

First of all I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

Financially, Sapphire Lakes is in good shape. As I write this article with a few weeks left in 2016 it looks like we will finish the year as projected in our 2016 budget with a carryover figure of around $21,000. Areas with the biggest savings were Property Insurance $18,000, Electric $9,000 and the fact we did not need to use the Contingency money of $7,000. Areas over budget were Sewer & Water $5,000 and Building Repairs $9,000.

For 2017 the Master budget will increase by 6.27% over last year, however that is all driven by the addition of internet service now being paid by the Master at $30 a month per unit owner.

In 2016 our budget was $1,200,000 versus 2017 of $1,270,000 which is an increase of $70,000. The internet alone in 2017 will cost $141,000 for the 8 months of service starting May 1st. So, the bottom line without the addition of internet, the Master reduced the budget by $71,000.

The reserve dollars will end the year at $583,099 prior to the redistribution of $293,578 back to the 15 associations as they take over the responsibility for Carports, Garages and Driveways. This will leave the Master $289,521 in reserves to start the New Year.

I am looking forward to working with everyone in 2017. Hope to see everyone around. Thanks,

Mike Mears

SAPPHIRE LAKES INFORMATION

Entrance Gates

Unit owners may purchase additional swipe cards at a cost of $15.00 by check only and are available from our Property Manager, Karl Forsman.

Pool Umbrellas

All pools have umbrellas on the decks. If you are the last to leave the pool area, please be responsible and lower any umbrellas that are open. Thank you.

An Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) is installed at the cabana at the Recreation area restroom.

Central Car Washing Area

There is an area located near the recreation area washroom facility for residents to wash cars.

It is mandatory for boats to be washed only in this area. Boat rinsing should be limited to 15 minutes after it has been in saltwater.

Your Pets

Please report any violations of the pet rules that you witness or observe to our Property Manager Karl Forsman (353-2465) so that proper action can be taken against offenders.

And also, please remember pets are a privilege, not a right. Many people have a fear of dogs so please be considerate of others when walking your pets.

Reminder!!! And also –Please do not feed the wild animals including feral cats, squirrels and ducks! They are creatures of the wild and should fend for themselves. After Association meetings at the Pools or gatherings at the Picnic area, any garbage should be removed and placed in a dumpster nearby. The raccoons leave quite a mess scattering the garbage!

Another issue regarding our beautiful grounds, they are for all to enjoy so please do not pick the flowers as everyone enjoys them when walking in the community.

Garden Waste

Plant debris should be piled or bagged and placed along the street, not at the dumpsters or parking lots, for pick up by the landscaping company Tuesday and Friday.

You are urged to please help the environment by recycling whenever possible. Newspaper, flyers, flattened small cardboard boxes, catalogs, magazines, telephone books, paper grocery bags, clear, green and brown bottles and jars, aluminum and steel/tin food and beverage cans, all plastics #1 through #7 can all be places in the recycle bins.

Please, please, do not put garbage into the re-cycling bins!!!!

Before placing large cardboard boxes in the garbage bins, please break them down to ensure that the dumpsters are not filled before the garbage truck arrives. Small boxes should be collapsed and placed in the recycling containers.

If you have large items such as water heaters, stoves, furniture etc, please contact Karl at 353-2465. Karl will contact Waste Management for a pick-up time. There is a $30 surcharge for special pickup.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ARTICLES BESIDE THE DUMPSTERS!!

For hazardous wastes such as paint, oil or solvents, they may be taken to the Waste Disposal site at 2640 Enterprise Avenue West with no fee. They are open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or watch the Naples News.

Bikers: please make sure to ride WITH the traffic and to have reflectors and/or lights on your bicycle. We want everyone to be safe!!

And vehicles, please obey the Stop signs. We have been fortunate that no one has caused an accident yet but the potential is there. Please do this for the safety of all!

Editor’s Comments

Hope all had a very Merry Christmas and Hanukkah and wish everyone a very Happy New Year!

Below is a description of how the pool skimmers function in each of our pools. We ask that residents refrain from adding water to the pools as this upsets the balance of the procedure. Thank you!

POOL SKIMMER - LEDGE FUNCTION

Gulfshore Pool Services has been asked to provide a brief description of how our skimmer ledges work in Pools 1 – 4. Following is a short description and it our hope that this explains the function of the skimmer ledge and the importance of keeping the water level at the proper height. Many commercial pools have a slanted skimmer ledge design that enables skimming of the surface of the pool. The design of the skimmer ledge depends on the correct level of water in the pool so that floating leaves, bugs and other debris will ‘flow’ over the leading edge of the skimmer and not return to the pool. The debris collects at the skimmer grates and flows to the collection tank where the filters are located.

The diagram below shows a typical slanted ledge design:

POOL DECK

The level of the water in the pool must be maintained such that the water ‘rolls’ over the edge but cannot return back to the pool without flowing to the collection tank and being filtered. If the water is too low then the debris never gets to the skimmer grates. If the water level is too high, the debris floats back into the pool and does not go down the skimmer grates to the collection tank.
