Using a Flash Drive on a CWU Computer

Using a Flash Drive on a CWU Computer

When you insert a USB flash drive into a CWU computer, Windows will recognize the device but it may not be accessible. This behavior is the result of Windows assigning the drive to the first available physical, usually “F”, but the “F” drive on campus computers is assigned to a network function. The following work-around will resolve the issue.

1. With the flash drive disconnected from the computer, open “MY Computer” and scroll down to the “F” drive. Right-click on the drive and select “Disconnect” from the menu. It will reconnect the next time you start your computer.

2. Connect the flash drive; it should now show as the “F” drive. This is sufficient for occasional or one-time use but, if you wish to use the same flash drive on a regular basis, follow the steps below to eliminate having to go through this procedure.

3. Open “Control Panel” and double-click on “Administrative Tools.”

4. Then, double-click on “Computer Management” and click on “disk management” in the left pane.

5. In the right pane, right click on the flash drive (in this example, TravelDrive) and select “Change drive letter and paths.”

6. In the new window, click on the “change” button. Then, click on the drop-down list and select a drive to assign to the flash drive (“R” and “O” are unused and won’t cause any conflicts).

Once you have assigned a new drive letter to a flash drive, Windows will always assign the same drive to that particular flash drive. However, this procedure will have to be repeated for each flash drive you use.
