MICHIGAN TEACHERS LESSON PLAN PROJECT FORMAT NAME: Jaymie MillerSUBJECT: Elementary ArtSTATE STANDARD: ART.VA.II.2.4 Use symbols to create artwork that expresses and communicates meaning.LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S): The student will learn about how you can use symbols in art to create meaning (depth) by creating crests that represent themselves.ASSESSMENT/PERFORMANCE MEASURE: Students will be assessed by doing a performance assessment on their final piece of art. A self-performance assessment will be conducted by students-so students and teacher can reflect on the work produced and if they followed directions. A formative existing exercise worksheet to show if they retained knowledge will also be used to assess students learning, along with reflective question at the end of class to write in journal. Use an E-Portfolio (Google or Seesaw) that you can load work onto- It can be used as a tool for self-assessment, self-reflection and personal development and growth. It can also invite feedback from teachers and peers.Performance Task List Assessment for Art WorkDid I use my initial for the whole page? What is the setting? Are students in pairs, groups, stations, floor, library, science lab?Materials: 8x11 paper, sharpie (black), cart of mixed media (colored pencils, markers, crayons, oil pastels etc.Students are in stations at tables of 4 with an artwork cart of mixed media (colored pencils, markers, crayons, oil pastels etc.) in the middle of table.KEY VOCABULARY and ACADEMIC LANGUAGEWhat vocabulary terms must students know to understand the concept being taught?Symbols, signs, depth (meaning), contour line, crestFOCUS ACTIVITYWhat activity will students engage in that will pique their interest about the upcoming lesson? Think of this like a preview for an upcoming movie – something that ignites curiosityShow how emojis are like symbols-ask students the meaning of different emojis on your phone.Show paintings of artwork giving examples of how symbolism was used to bring more depth (meaning) to the work. Show a crest and how the colors and symbols have meaning-Show the State of Michigan Flag and how it has a crest that has meaning.CONNECTION TO PRIOR LEARNINGThis is what you say to students about what they have already learned and how it prepares them for what they are about to learn; review what they have learned to prepare them for the upcoming lesson.Show how symbols have been used in history and symbols they already know with flashcards. Symbols on road signs, restrooms, at school. Show how color from previous assignments can bring meaning also-like Holiday’s have certain colors, seasons are associated with certain colors and feelings can be represented with color.OBJECTIVE STATEMENT (be sure to include the performance measure)This is what you say to students about what students will learn today, and how they will show they have learned the content (that is the performance measure)The students will identify how symbols can be used in artwork to create more meaning (depth) to the piece. They will observe past paintings that use symbols. They will be assessed by performance on producing a project that followed direction and using symbols that reflect meaning on who they are. And then do a self-assessment list about what they should have done on the project.PURPOSE OF LEARNINGWhy do students need to learn this today? This should be written in what you will say to students and should include both why it is important to the content and why it is relevant in their lives.Symbols in paintings can bring more (depth) meaning to the piece and help them communicate visuals. Being able to recognize different symbols in painting can help students use visual clues to bring a deeper meaning.INSTRUCTIONAL STEPSInclude:Step by Step InstructionsKey PointsDirections to givePass out 8x11 paper with the outline of a crest printed on paper and a pencil.Create a block letter of first initial of your name filling the crest with pencil. Model an example on the overhead. Use a minimum of 6 symbols to communicate who you are around the letter in the crest or in the background of the paper.Use a black sharpie to outline symbols and initial.Use multimedia to color in picture.Once finished have students sign their name in the left-hand corner with Sharpie.LITERACY STRATEGIES USEDBe sure you include activities that support literacy; vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking and writing Read the book – American Symbols A-Z (nice history lesson)Show pictures of the Tell Me a Story 72 symbols by Barbara WilsonHave students research the meanings behind the symbols used on the State of Michigan Flag and write in their journals what each symbol on the flag stands for.STUDENT USE OF TECHNOLOGYEven if you do not have enough technology devices for your students, you must include student use of technology as if you did have all the technology you need.Use the Doodle App to draw a painting using the paint tool to make different symbols.Use phone connected to computer to show emoji are really just a big network of symbols we use to communicate.Take a picture of the student’s crest have them use a digital app that allows them to place their crest on a flag that they can choose background color and then have them load the image onto their E portfolio.6 QUESTIONS FOR UNDERSTANDING1 question per each level of Bloom’s TaxonomyIdentify the level of Bloom’sQuestions should increase in complexity as lesson progressesRemembering-What symbols do you see in different pieces of artwork.Understanding-Translate what symbols mean.Applying- Select symbols to put in your drawing that connect to who you are.Analyzing- Examine how the symbols can put depth (meaning) into your work.Evaluating- Evaluate how the symbols work together to create a story.Creating- Compose a piece of artwork that uses symbols to create a crest that reflects who you are. MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMMODATIONSCreate at least one modification/accommodation for a student with special needs, and one modification/accommodation for English language learnersSpecial needs learner modification-use stamps to use for the symbols. Have an outline of a crest already outlined on a larger paper.Accommodation for English language learners use lots of pictures of the symbols with labels in both English and other language. Use peer modeling when in groups. Use the overhead board so the student can follow along visually. Let student choose if they would like to reflect on the meaning of the flag the other language they speak in journal or State of Michigan flag. RETEACH/EXTENSIONInclude different activities for struggling students and for students who already understand the materialReteach-Have students go over road sign symbols and how they have more in-depth meaning.Extension-Do color drawings in sketch books of symbols you see around you.Differentiate learning (Group Collaboration/Theme)- Students are placed in 3 groups. Tier 1: Makes a list of the different symbols they see on the flag-with a small simple line drawing by each symbol.Tier 2: Draws simple line drawings of symbols they see from flag and summarizes the meaning of each symbols meaning.Tier 3: Concludes what the big picture of all the symbols represent to our state and draws the simple line symbols.CLOSURE: Review: How will you cement the learning that has taken place in this lesson? Connect to future learning: How will what students learned today help them in upcoming lessons?Cement learner-Have a worksheet with miniature paintings with some main symbols in it…have students write what the meaning of the symbol brings to the picture off to the side. Also have students explain their symbols on their crest to a partner. In journals/sketch books answer the question: How would you describe yourself looking at the symbols you used in your crest?Do you think the symbols used on our flag represent the State of Michigan well?Future it will help with -Teaching students’ meanings and the use of symbols will help students gain more understanding of pieces of artwork and how to bring more depth (meaning) to a piece of artwork. ................
