iTunes install/reinstall error re “Could not open key” Scroll all the way down to page 4 re important “Comments”…

Symptoms

When installing iTunes for Windows on a 64-bit Windows Vista or Windows 7 system, you may see a "Could not open key" error message citing a registry key of the form UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]. For example:

Could not open key:

UNKNOWN\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8

\b25099274a207264182f8181add555d0.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel

Resolution (windows 7 & vista only)

Note that the following procedure involves a registry edit. Back up your registry prior to proceeding.

• Do a complete uninstall of iTunes and related software components as per the instructions in the following document (but do not attempt to reinstall iTunes just yet):

• In the "Advanced Security Settings for Components" screen that comes up, click the "Owner" tab

• In the "Owner" tab, check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects tickbox, select "Administrators" and click Apply

• If (after clicking Apply) you receive a "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys" message, click OK:

Comments;

After hours of “searching for support” I found this and it works perfectly (for me anyway) so worth a try for you.

It looks more difficult then you imagine, just take it step by step. Print out and use as a guide for each step you perform.

Prior to doing this you must go to your control panel and click on programs so that you can remove all traces of iTunes and its supporting programs.

IN THIS ORDER…

Total iTunes Removal for Windows 7 and Vista

To successfully remove iTunes from your Windows 7 or Vista machine, you will have to know in what order each iTunes component needs to be uninstalled. Ensure iTunes isn't running and follow the steps below in order to completely remove the program and all its support applications.

Go to Control Panel -- You can get to this by clicking the Windows Start Orb and then selecting Control Panel.

Launch the Programs and Features applet -- click the Uninstall a Program link (under Program menu) or if in Classic View mode, click the Programs and Features link.

Uninstall the iTunes program -- find the iTunes entry in the list and click on it to highlight it. Click the Uninstall option (above Name column). A dialog box will pop up on the screen asking if you are sure you want to remove the program from your computer -- click the Yes button to uninstall. If you see any other iTunes references (including iPod Updater), then uninstall these too in the same way.

Remove Support Applications -- uninstall the following applications if showing as installed (in the correct order)

QuickTime

Apple Software Update

Apple Mobile Device Support

Bonjour

Apple Application Support (you'll see this entry if you have iTunes 9 or higher installed)

Restart Windows

Then go to the top of the 1st page and follow instructions to the letter…

If you can’t manage this then take your machine and these four (4) pages to your savvy computer engineer whether at Currys/Dixons or ask your Geeky next door neighbour to help out and to follow these instructions to the letter.

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR COCKUPS ON DOING THE ABOVE
