Subject: Presenting the Design and Audience Focus of my Quick Reference Project

Proposal for Hyper Text Markup Language Coding

This memo describes why and how I intend to create a reference sheet for HTML coding.

The HTML Project

I have chosen to develop a quick reference card for Hyper Text Markup Language, or HTML,

coding, which is the most basic language for publishing hypertext on the World Wide Web.

Learning HTML allows a user to understand the foundation code beneath any web page

and through its application develop the universal framework of a web-based document. My

quick reference card will cover the basics of HTML as a tool for web page development

including tag use, style, and the general formatting of the language for novice application.

Audience Composition

The audience for the quick reference card will be limited to the other ten members of the course,

who all have a limited knowledge of what HTML coding is and how it is used. Anthony is

vaguely familiar with the scripting code, but all others have no experience with HTML. The

group, although generally confident in their abilities to learn new technologies, requires an

intelligible and patient presentation of new information in order to become comfortable with a

format they have never seen before. In general, my audience prefers that the information

included on the card be concise and logical so that, as first time users of the code, they can

efficiently increase their understanding of the language and easily re-reference the help card.

Like my audience, I have no experience with HTML formatting, and I am in the process of

familiarizing myself with its application. I hope that my own inexperience with the HTML will

be an advantage to me while designing my quick reference card because I will be able to best

understand the documentation needs of my audience as they are my own.

Focus and Design of the Reference Card

In order to best serve a novice user group, my quick reference card will present the basics of

HTML coding in a manner that is easy to read and understand. The front side of the card will

briefly explain what HTML is and how it is used in web application and present the essential

structure, format and link tags such as and . These tags will be shown as

they would appear when put into Microsoft Notepad or WordPad in one column and explained in

another, so that they are clearly defined as my class members initially learn the tags but easily

referenced upon continued use. The back page of the card will detail more complicated elements

of technique and style used in HTML, such as color and font design, and present a visual

screenshot of what a full HTML page might look like.

Based upon this analysis, I am requesting approval for my HTML quick reference card.
