Up to 1/3 patients with cough-variant asthma later develop typical wheeze. The development of wheeze or airway hyper-responsiveness is very uncommon in eosinophilic bronchitis. Cough can only be considered idiopathic after thorough assessment in a specialist cough clinic. 20% referrals remain undiagnosed, and are given this label. ................
