Bienvenido al tercer año del Español – I am looking forward to a fun and productive year in third year Spanish. We will continue to build on our vocabulary and learn commands and the subjunctive mood, as well as other grammar constructions. We will review all you have learned so far. You will have specific vocabulary to learn. We will continue with the same text book series this year using Realidades 2 and 3. Remember this book has LOTS of activities that can be accessed online by going to . This is a year to practice and apply what you learned in your first two years of Spanish. You will get lots of speaking practice and do several presentations in front of the class in Spanish. We will study Hispanic artists, and poets, and famous historical figures. We will learn the vocabulary for accidents and disasters, we will make a disaster video. We will learn camping and competition vocabulary. We will learn animal vocabulary. We will learn cooking vocabulary and make a “How to prepare…” video, while you teach us to cook. We will be reading Spanish stories regularly, and writing short essays as well. There is not a lot of new grammar, just lots of practice with constructions you have been exposed to. This class is a college prep class. As such you should plan on a quicker pace than previous years, and to spend more time studying the content. You are expected to be able to APPLY what you are learning and use the language. We will be USING the language to learn it. SPEAK SPANISH in class.

Grading:

Assessments = 80% including performance, presentation and projects and pen and paper quizzes and tests: - Students will do a variety of presentations in this class demonstrating use of the Spanish language - these may include dialogues, memorizing poems, or cultural presentations or specific themed projects such as a children’s book, a research project and an oral and written report (in Spanish) on a Spanish speaking artist. We will also have regular speaking proficiency tests/checks this year. This will comprise 80% of your semester grade.

There are weekly assessments in this class and tests are administered at the end of a chapter. These are the measurement of whether or not students have mastered the learning standards. However, because students achieve mastery at different times there are some instances that may warrant a student re-taking a test. This is an option that will only be available to students that have completed all homework for that standard and that complete a form, signed by the parent, explaining how they will prepare for a re-take of the test. Students will have two weeks from the time of a test to appeal for a second test and will only be granted permission to do so if the student submits an adequate preparation plan and presents evidence of its completion. Directions for test re-take directions are on my swift pages. One retake a semester will be the maximum allowed, and all retakes are at my discretion. Colleges do not allow retakes, and this is a college prep class.

20%   21st Century Skills (21st Century Skills are a set of abilities that students need to develop in order to succeed in college/work/military.)

Behavior – All ARHS rules apply. Be respectful. Pay close attention to the electronics rules in your student handbook. No soda in class. No junk food in class. Socializing and texting are a hindrance to the learning process, please join the conversation in Spanish and respect your classmates. Cheating and plagiarism (including the use of language translators) will not be tolerated. If you cheat expect to receive a zero for the said test, project or assignment with limited time for re-do, which must be done in front of me, before or after school. The most important thing to do is be flexible, take a risk and try everything. ¡Buena Suerte!

DONATIONS NEEDED: If you can afford to bring in one or two of the following items it would be appreciated: Disinfecting wipes (for sanitizing desks), Hand Sanitizer, or Kleenex. Thanks. You may exchange one item for a free homework pass or late homework pass (your choice).

Electronics: Cell phones should not be out during class time, and are really not safe being at school. Students should have these turned off and put in backpacks during class time. We will occasionally make use of cell phones with online activities such as Kahoot, quizlet and Padlet, but otherwise, put them away!

BRING supplies each day to class!
