ClipboardSoutheast RegionThe Ohio School Boards Association / October 2013 – Volume 2 – Issue 2Fall Conference – The region’s Fall Conference held at Tri-County Career Center in Nelsonville on September 26 was a very successful event. 170 registered from 35 of the region’s 84 districts for a 42% turnout. Attendees were treated to a delicious meal prepared by Chef Steadman and Chef Adami and students in Hocking College’s Culinary Arts Program. Hors d’oeuvres were prepared by students in the Tri-County Career Center’s Culinary Arts Program. Wonderful music was provided by the Athens County High School Jazz Band under the direction of Terry Robb from Nelsonville-York City. The band is comprised of students from various high schools in Athens County. Other Tri-County Career Center students and their advisors assisting with the evening’s activities are part of the center’s Fashion and Marketing Program, instructed by Melissa Gee; the SkillsUSA team from the Computer Tech Program, instructed by Tom McGreevey and Student Ambassadors.Veteran Board Members recognized for ten years of service were Wendy Aichele / Southern Local (Perry); Robert Cornwell / Gallipolis City and Gallia-Vinton-Jackson JVSD; Dale DeRolph / Northern Local (Perry); Terry Hutchison / Tri-Valley Local; Tom Kearns / Wolf Creek Local; John J. Orlett / Northwest Local and Debbie West / Warren Local and Washington County JVSD. Recognized for twenty years of service were: Lynn Angell / Gallipolis City and Jeanette Thomas / Athens-Meigs ESC. The Region Recognition Program’s top recipients were: Outstanding Student Program – 21st Century Program / National Road Elementary School in Zanesville City; Outstanding Male Student – Hao Tinh Son Le / Philo High School in Franklin Local; Outstanding Female Student - Ashley McLean / Philo High School in Franklin Local; Outstanding Faculty Member – Mary Robinson / Perry Elementary School in East Muskingum Local; Outstanding Classified Staff Member – Chris Slaughter – River View High School in River View Local; Outstanding Treasurer – Lily M. Blevins – Gallia-Vinton ESC; Outstanding Volunteer – Marsha McCorkle / Oak Hill-Union Local; Thomas J. Gibbs – former superintendent at Warren Local and Fort Frye Local (shared services) and Outstanding New Program or Innovation – Lean Six Sigma Program / Muskingum Valley ESC. The two students from Philo High School marked the first time in the history of the Recognition Program that both outstanding male and female students were from the same high school in the same district. Tinh is ranked #1 and Ashley is ranked #2 in the Class of 2014 with a close .012 separating their GPAs. Awesome!Thank you for your participation! It’s not too late to begin thinking of nominations for 2014! Look for information in March!The Region’s Outstanding School Board Members were: Roddy O. Hineman / Belpre City and Washington County Career Center; Larry E. Holdren / Ohio Valley ESC and Washington County Career Center; Daniel L. Hothem / River View Local and Coshocton County Career Center and Dr. Ralph D. Smith / Maysville Local. One of these individuals will represent the region on the All-Ohio School Board at the Capital Conference.Raymond E. Griffith, retired vocational agriculture teacher from Coshocton County, was recognized with the region’s President’s Award. Judge Linton D. Lewis, Jr. was honored as the 2013 recipient of the Advocate of Education Hall of Fame Award, the highest form of recognition in the region. Judge Lewis presided over the historic 1994 DeRolph v. Ohio court case in Perry County. His judicial wisdom in the case was not just about the children in Perry County, it was about every child in Ohio. The struggle continues …Several districts were registered with at least three board members, superintendent and/or treasurer. Congratulations! Open House – Oak Hill High School will be the site for the region’s Open House on October 23 from 6:30 ~ 8:00 p.m. Located in Oak Hill, there is no charge for the event. This is a wonderful opportunity to network with neighboring districts. To register, contact Paul Mock, regional manager. Region Executive Committee – the committee met April 28 in Zanesville and August 18 in Marietta with region president Dan Hothem presiding. OSBA’s Janice Smith, Michelle Francis, Kenna Haycox (Zanesville), Terri Shaw and Cheryl Ryan (Marietta) were our guests. The region Nominating Committee recommended Gail Requardt from East Muskingum Local / Mid-East CTCs for region president-elect in 2014. Her nomination was approved during the Business Meeting at the Fall Conference. The next meeting is set for November 10 in Columbus at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.I look forward to seeing you at the Capital Conference.
