11 AP: Language and Composition Junior Research Paper

Project: The Advanced Placement Junior Research Paper project will require you to read a text independently, research, and develop an arguable thesis for which you will write a paper.

Topic Options:

Option #1

Topic: Social Issues

You may choose to write an argumentative research paper about a social issue currently affecting our society. You will not be required to read an additional book for this choice, but you will have to write an additional 3 pages.

Process Summary:

1. Choose a topic that is interesting, timely, debatable, and unique

2. Research this topic finding sources that both defend and refute your argument, essentially creating your own synthesis essay. You should find a minimum of 8-10 sources.

3. Develop an arguable thesis pertaining to your research

4. Continue researching, take notes, and plan your paper

5. Produce a well-written, 9-12 page researched paper with a relevant and supported thesis, proper citations, and a works cited page.

Option #2

Topic: Literary or Nonfiction Research Paper following similar guidelines as your previous two researched papers.

Process Summary:

1. Choose an author and text/texts from the list attached

2. Read and annotate your text

3. Research the text, author, and topics of interest pertaining to the content of the text

4. Develop an arguable thesis pertaining to your reading.

5. Continue research, take notes, and plan your paper

6. Produce a well-written, 6-10 page researched paper with a relevant and supported thesis, proper citations, and a works cited page.

Novel Choices: Take time to look through the following list of authors to find a text that you feel will fully interest you. You will want to take your time exploring your options; do not simply pick a book randomly – do your research to find the best one for you!
