LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

We learn in today’s Bible passage that God is all-powerful—stronger, wiser, and mightier than anyone else. This was obvious when God sent fire to Elijah’s altar even after the prophet had soaked it in water. All the people saw that God was the one true God, the only one worthy of worship. Kids will recognize God’s power in a new way and praise him for what he does in their lives. Use this lesson to find out more about God’s true power.

DISCOVERY POINT

God is all-powerful.

BIBLE FOCUS

1 Kings 18:20-39

KEY VERSE

“He said, ‘Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power’ ” (Daniel 2:20).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, Bibles, “God’s Power” handout, scissors, pencils, and magazines

Before This Lesson

• Print the “God’s Power” handout and cut apart the sections. If you’ll have more than four Bible Crews, you’ll need to make additional copies so that each Bible Crew will have one of the Scripture assignments. Put one Scripture assignment in each Bible, marking 1 Kings 18.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): Bible as prepared above, magazines, one pencil and pair of scissors per child.

• Review 1 Kings 18:20-39.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or (Quarter 5/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

2. As kids arrive have them find a partner. SAY: Let’s play a game that’ll help us talk about the Bible story. Have you ever played Rock, Paper, Scissors? This game is like that—with a fun twist! It’s called Fire, Wood, Water. Here are the rules: You will challenge each other three times. Each time, you’ll make a sign for either fire, wood, or water. Here’s the fire sign: Put your hands together in front of your chest with your fingers spread. For wood, hold your arms straight out in front of your body, clasping your hands together. And for water, hold both hands with your fingers pointing down. Then we’ll see who’s more powerful, and this is how it works: Fire has power over wood, wood has power over water, and water has power over fire.

3. Help kids practice the signs by calling out the different elements and having kids show the signs. Than have pairs face each other while you SAY: Go! Have pairs determine the “winner” for each round. Play several rounds of Fire, Wood, Water.

ASK:

• How hard or easy was it to be more powerful than your partner in this game?

• What was it like when you were more powerful? less powerful?

• In real life, why does fire beat wood and water beat fire? And, why do you or don’t you think fire ever beat water?

SAY: Fire is powerful and can destroy big things. Water in a flood is powerful, too. Today we’re going to find out about something even more powerful than fire and water!

4. Play the “Rocket Countdown” (Quarter 5/Countdown Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and have kids call out the numbers as they appear.

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, TV/DVD player

1. SAY: God is all-powerful. Nothing is more powerful than God; in fact, God created everything, even the most powerful thing you can think of! God even made it so fire, wood, and water act the way they do. Well, usually anyway. Let’s read about a time when things happened a bit unusually…Take out your Bible, and open it to the marked page. Your crew is responsible for reading the Scripture, deciding which sign from our game matches your Scripture, and then creating one or two sentences that use only 10 words total to describe what happened. In four minutes, everyone in your crew will need to be able to show your sign and share with others what happened in your section without reading what you wrote on your paper. So be sure to save some time to practice what you’ve decided. Ready, go!

2. After four minutes, play the “Rocket Countdown” (Quarter 5/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

SAY: There is a number next to the Scripture on each of your papers. Look to see which one is on yours. When I call your number, each member on your crew is to go to another crew, show the sign that you’ve decided on, and share the 10-word message that describes what happened in your part of the Scripture. So if I call out “one,” each member of Bible Crew 1 must visit a different Bible Crew and communicate the sign and 10-word message. Be sure that all the other crews have had a visit and a chance to hear the message. I’ll expect that all of you can tell the whole story when I finish calling out all the numbers.

Call out numbers 1 through 4 in order. Be sure to allow enough time so that kids can communicate their message and return to their Bible Crew. Ask for one or two volunteers to tell the whole story.

3. ASK:

• Tell about a time you’ve felt like Elijah, the prophets, or the people watching from today’s Bible story.

• What was it like to rely on each other to get the whole story of God’s power?

• How did Elijah rely on God?

• Why do you think God chose to show his power the way he did?

4. SAY: It must’ve been amazing to be there that day. Here’s little old Elijah all by himself with a soaking wet altar but completely confident that God would prove that he is the one true God. God was all-powerful then, and God is all-powerful today and just as active in our lives.

Have a volunteer read aloud the Key Verse, Daniel 2:20.

ASK:

• When have you experienced God’s power?

• How do you think God’s power can help you?

• If you believe God is all-powerful and will use his power to help you, what should you do when you’re in a tough situation?

5. SAY: The greatest way we experience God’s incredible power is through a relationship with God. Elijah had a relationship with God and knew that God is all-powerful. Let’s praise God for being all-powerful right now.

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player or TV/DVD player

1. Have kids remain in their Bible Crews. SAY: God is all-powerful and therefore deserves all our praise. Go through the magazines in your Bible Exploration Kits and cut out images that reflect God’s power in the world and your lives. They can be words, pictures, or anything else. This is your way of praising God for helping you like he helped Elijah.

2. Play the instrumental version of “How Great Thou Art” (Track 14) from the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD while kids work. Give Bible Crews a few minutes to cut out images. Then SAY: As we sing our praises to God, hold up your images as a way of showing you know and will tell others that God is all-powerful.

3. Set up the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD. PLAY:

• “How Great Thou Art” (CD Track 6) (DVD Quarter 5/Track 6)

O Lord, my God,

When I in awesome wonder

Consider all the works your hands have made,

I see the stars,

I hear the rolling thunder,

Your power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul,

My Savior God, to thee.

How great thou art,

How great thou art!

Then sings my soul,

My Savior God, to thee.

How great thou art,

How great thou art!

(Repeat from the beginning.)

• “Nothing Is Impossible” (Luke 1:37) (CD Track 3) (DVD Quarter 5/Track 3)

Sometimes when you don’t know what to do,

It feels like you don’t even have a clue.

That is when you’ve got to turn to God,

Because you know that he can do anything!

Nothing is impossible with God!

Nothing is impossible with God! Yeah!

(Repeat from the beginning.)

• “We Can Trust Him” (Psalm 33:4) (CD Track 5) (DVD Track 5)

We can trust him. Yeah!

If there’s one thing we can count on,

It’s that God will never let us down, and

We can trust everything he does.

He keeps his promises.

We know because

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him .

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: images from Let’s Praise!, Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD, CD player

1. SAY: God is all-powerful, and there’s nothing we should be afraid of. We can depend on God’s power for everything in our lives, whether it’s doing something we know is right or telling a friend about Jesus. We’re going to pray now, asking God to show his power in our lives and help us rely on him. Prayerfully sit in a circle with your Bible Crew and create a mosaic with your magazine images in the center. Then consider your mosaic as you continue praying. You’ll know our prayer time is coming to a close when I stop the music.

2. Give Bible Crews time to pray together. Play the instrumental version of “We Can Trust Him” (Psalm 33:4) (Track 13) from the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD while kids pray.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: none

SAY: What a great time! Give at least three people a fire, wood, or water high five and say, “God is all-powerful!”

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

In My Day

Supplies: none

Have Bible Crews each create a different setting and retell what happened to Elijah. It could be that Elijah is recounting what happened to some new arrivals in heaven or someone steps into a time machine and goes back to see it in person or there is a newspaper reporter covering the event for the local paper.

Hiding It in Your Heart

Supplies: cords of lights (such as Christmas lights)

Give each Bible Crew a cord of lights. Let each person take a turn plugging in the set of lights and reading aloud the Key Verse, Daniel 2:20. Then have the person share one “power connection” he or she would like God to make in his or her life and why. After each turn, the reader should unplug the lights. If a string of lights is not available, use a lamp.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—power and altar are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
