Starting with the November 17th storage launch, HP will be consolidating the tape

portfolio to introduce "universal products" and discontinue the duplicate SKUs. This launch

will cover Ultrium and DLT VS80 tape drives.

• Universal Ultrium 460 (Carbon)

• Universal Ultrium 230 (Carbon) Universal Ultrium 215 (Carbon)

• Universal DLT VS 80 (Carbon)

The DAT and Tape Array products will follow in a January storage launch.

PCI-X 2Gb Fibre Channel/1000Base-SX HBA

Brief Product Description and Functionality:

The A9782A (a PCI-X 2Gigabit Fibre Channel and 1000Base-SX multifunction adapter) is a dual-port HBA hosting Fibre Channel and 1000Base-SX controllers situated behind a PCI-X to PCI-X bridge. It operates at 133MHz/64 bits on both the primary bus and the secondary bus. The NGCC is 3.3V keyed. All signaling and form factor conform to the PCI-X Addendum to the PCI Local Bus Specification Revision 1.0a.

The adapter has three key ASICs: a PCI-X-to-PCI-X bridge, a Gigabit Ethernet Fiber controller, and a 2-Gigabit Fibre Channel Controller.

The IBM IBM21P100MGC PCI-X-to-PCI-X bridge chip will run at a maximum of 133MHz/64 bits. This chip is only tolerant of 3.3V signaling and therefore the card will be keyed for use in 3.3V slots only.

The bridge will support the following modes of operation on the primary side:

o PCI-X 133MHz, 64 bits

o PCI-X 100MHz, 64 bits

o PCI-X 66MHz, 64 bits

o PCI 66MHz, 64 bits

o PCI 60MHz, 64 bits

o PCI 33MHz, 64 bits

o PCI 33MHz, 32 bits

o PCI 30MHz, 32 bits

o PCI 30MHz, 64 bits

The secondary side will be hard wired to run at PCI-X 100MHz, 64 bits.

The Fibre Channel port is based on QLogic's second generation PCI-X ISP2312 FC controller chip. It supports arbitrated loop and fabric topologies, and all legacy FC devices.

This IO card is not universally keyed, thus will only work in 3.3V-keyed slots. For example, slots 4-7 on Superdome are 3.3V-keyed slots. Slots 0-3 and 8-11 are 5V-keyed and will not work with this card. On the rp7410 and the rp8400, the allowable slots are 1 to 6.

Legacy machines, such as the N-, L-, and A-class only have 5V-keyed PCI slots and therefore cannot accept a PCI card that is keyed for 3.3V only. All new HP servers have 3.3V PCI keyed slots.

Technical Description

The A9782A 1000Base-SX and 2Gb Fiber Channel PCI-X Combo Card supports the following features:

Windows Server 2003: clustering support update

Microsoft Clustering Service is included with the Windows Server 2003, Datacenter operating system. There is no additional Microsoft software necessary for clustering support with Windows Server 2003. However, HP must do qualification testing of Windows clustering and publish supported configurations. Additionally, there are two key pieces of HP software necessary for a credible Windows clustering offering on Superdome (MC/ServiceGuard is not supported on Windows):

➢ HP SecurePath support on 64-bit Windows and HP Storage (EVA, XP). SecurePath (v4.0c) is in plan to be supported for our Phase II ship release in November 2003. Clustering support on Superdome with Windows is planned to be available by January 2004. Note that this SecurePath software only supports same site cluster capability.

➢ Cluster Extension XP (CLX) is needed to enable geographically dispersed clusters. NSS does not yet have a schedule for CLX support on 64-bit Windows (with XP or EVA storage). We will keep you updated as that schedule progresses.

HVDS Connectivity for StorageWorks Optical Products

The medium (300mx, 600mx and 700mx) and large (1200mx and 2200mx) StorageWorks Optical Jukeboxes have connectivity via either Single-Ended (SE) SCSI or Hi-Voltage Differential SCSI (HVDS). Connecting via HVD, which is the preferred method for cable length and performance, has become an issue when trying to connect to ProLiant PCI-X servers. For these servers it was critical to find an HBA that supported HVDS as well as fit the slot and the operating characteristics of the PCI-X interface. The LSI8751D HBA was chosen as the card. This card is not available as an HP part number and will have to be sourced as a 3rd party option, available either directly from the website or through other vendors. It will be qualified for the following servers due to their high volumes:

DL380 DL580 ML370 ML350

Below is the additional information that will be added to the Quick Specs for the above listed servers. This information is for the DL380 & 580 and will be the same for the ML350 & 370. As a note, the UDO product line, when launched, will not have this issue as these products will have Low-Voltage Differential SCSI (LVDS) connectivity.

Please note that this is a Universal card, meaning that it can be plugged into either a PCI or a PCI-X slot, however its bus is still a PCI architecture and it will perform at PCI specifications.

Microsoft Exchange backup and restore enhancements featuring Exchange 2003 and HP Data Protector 5.1

Have you ever wondered why so many large companies have so many email servers? Or why there is no large-scale consolidation of Microsoft exchange servers?

The problem is IT administrators will not implement Exchange databases greater than 25GB because the restore time exceeds most service level agreements (SLA) (30 minutes).

The only hope is when a major re-development of Exchange takes place in early 2005 with a new SQL based back-end database which will offer much faster backup and restore by being truly multi-threaded.

Exchange 2003 releases for the month of October three new features to improve the backup and restore capabilities within Exchange.

Question: Is the HP StorageWorks DS2405 supported in direct connect with Itanium servers with

HP-UX?

In the latest version of the SSQR matrix (03.03.13) there is no information regarding the support

of the DS2405 JBODs on Itanium servers.

[pic]

Answer: Yes. The DS2405 is supported with the Itanium servers running HP-UX.

Question: I have a question regarding the MSL6030 Fibre to SCSI bridge. I know the 6030 version of the bridge is different to the one used in the 5030, but I'm not sure what those differences are, or why they are required.  Has the cache been expanded? Or any other areas that are different? I just need to justify for a customer the upgrade costs.

Answer: The HP StorageWorks Network Storage Router (NSR) E1200 allows customers to upgrade SCSI based tape libraries to Fibre Channel. They are installed into the library maximizing rack space for other components on the SAN.   The biggest difference between the two Network Storage Routers (E1200/E1200-160) is that the 160 is SCSI-3 vs. the e1200 being SCSI-2 (see table below for complete comparisons).

HP Nearline Products Information:

Product Comparisons, Sizing Tools & Library Upgrade Matrices

Additionally, there is a compatibility matrix at the following URL:

HBA and NSR interconnect compatibility matrix

that lists the FC to SCSI Routers, which are supported.

Basically, the e1200-160 is required in a MSL library utilizing Ultrium 2 drives.

Features

• Serverless Backup Support - Up to eight simultaneous streams of serverless backup jobs supported.

• 1Gb and 2Gb Fibre Channel support

• One E1200 router card can support multipleMSL5000 series libraries

• E1200-160 provides the necessary bandwidth to fully utilize the MSL6000's LTO2 tape drives

• Web Based Management

E1200 / E1200-160 Network Storage Router

The E1200 is an embedded Fibre Channel-to-SCSI Router option for the MSL5000 series Tape Libraries with 1 Fibre Channel, and 2 LVD/SE UlraSCSI-2 80MB/sec ports. The E1200-160 is an embedded Fibre Channel-to-SCSI Router option for the MSL6000 series Tape Libraries with 1 Fibre Channel, and 2 LVD/SE UlraSCSI-3 160MB/sec ports.

Description

The StorageWorks Network Storage Router E1200 is an embedded Fibre Channel-to-SCSI router option for the MSL5000 series of Tape Libraries with a single 1Gb, or 2Gb Fibre Channel port and dual UltraSCSI-2, 80MB/sec, LVD/SE ports. The StorageWorks Network Storage Router E1200-160 is an embedded Fibre Channel-to-SCSI router option for the MSL6000 series of Tape Libraries with a single 1Gb, or 2Gb Fibre Channel port and dual UltraSCSI-3, 160MB/sec, LVD ports. They allow multiple host servers to share the MSL5000 or MSL6000 family of libraries over a SAN. They offer support for serverless backup, 1 Gb/sec, or  2Gb/sec Fibre Channel and web-based remote management. The Routers also support Selective Storage Presentation (SSP) which allows multiple servers to selectively share storage resources while protecting data integrity via unique device map to host assignments, and SCSI Controller Command (SCC) which provides a means for the host server operating system to determine the number FC LUNs supported by the NSRs. Fibre Channel cable kits will need to be selected based on bus speed; either SC-LC for 1Gb Fibre Channel connections, or LC-LC for 2Gb Fibre Channel connections.

Answer: Not currently.  The E1200-Opal kit contained a cooling fan module that was required for the older Opal libraries, and the E1200-160 kit does not include that cooling fan module.  HP is exploring the options of creating another embedded NSR option for the Opal MSL libraries, but meanwhile both the NSR N1200 (280823-B21) and NSR M2402 (262653-B21) external routers are available to give the customer a path to upgrade the Opal MSL library to fibre channel.

Question: As of the new pricing of the EVA, we are supposed to be able to download the OS Platform Solution kits from the public web-site.  I have searched and can't find where HP is hiding them.

[pic]

Does anyone know where to go to get them?

Answer: The public location is:

This leads you to a list of storage products.  You then need to choose the EVA 5000 or 3000, and then pick "Download software" on the next page.  This will finally take you to the page where you can choose which OS you need.

Question: Can someone please update me on the support of AIX 5.2 with the HSG80 controller; the STREAMs document for this platform only lists up to AIX 5.1. Interestingly enough, SecurePath supports both AIX 5.2 and the HSG80.

Answer: Looking at the following slide for OS support for the HSG80 arrays, it implies that AIX V5.2 will not even be supported with the next (and last release of ACS for the HSG80, ACS V8.8).   The attached slide clearly shows future OS version support in red.

Question: Does HP support the VA7110/7410 connected to a HP-UX 11.23 MC/SG cluster?

Answer: Not currently…see below for current OS support for this solution.

For the VA7410:

Supported with HP-UX 10.20, 11.0, 11.11 and 11.22.

The VA7410 can be direct connected in a two node cluster configuration.

This device is not supported with Fibre Channel hubs.

This device should not be used as a boot device in a shared bus configuration in HA environments.

Requires firmware version a000 or later.

For the VA7110:

Supported with HP-UX 11.0 and 11.22.

This device should not be used as a boot device in a shared bus configuration in HA environments. Direct connect to the VA7110 is not supported for HA configurations.

Requires firmware version a100 or later.

Not supported with Fibre Channel hubs

Question: Is there any tape tool that can be used to obtain tape device throughput in an HP-UX

environment? Simply like the collect utility in a Tru64 platform?

Ad ex:

#

Answer: The easiest way to do that is by downloading, installing and using the Library & Tape Tools which are for free and come with every StorageWorks NearLine device.

Just download the latest version from:

there are a number of operating systems supported by this tool, including HP-UX.

But keep in mind that (if you’re using LTO-2) you have to tune the disks, not the tape. So rather have a look at your data source.

HP Managed Storage Services: delivering more value on demand – Success Story

HP has just completed a new StorageWorks XP related success story which describes how HP's Managed Services organization uses 36 HP StorageWorks XP arrays, each fully loaded, some with up to 1024 disk drives, to deliver outstanding high availability and high reliability storage to HP Managed Services customers. This account manages over 650 Terabytes of StorageWorks XP storage today.

This success story is a key competitive tool against EMC and IBM for the following reasons:

1. It clearly documents the reality of the scalability of the StorageWorks XP family. Customers can and do use the StorageWorks XP arrays at their maximum capacity

2. HP is serious about high end Enterprise storage. We use our own products to run our business and to help run other companies' businesses under service agreements. Some might say we "Eat our own dog food." In the case of the StorageWorks XP usage at HP, we would prefer to say we "Eat our own steak."

3. The StorageWorks XP can and does deliver outstanding reliability and availability for demanding customer environments.

4. HP's tools allow customers to manage extreme volumes of storage with minimal staff resources.

This document will provide an excellent proof point that HP knows high end enterprise storage.
