The McNabbs

Ramage

Ramage means "wild". 1855 terms.

Brian G. Ramadge: “The origins of the Ramage family stem from the Midlothians in Scotland and they appear to have been especially strong in the Musselburgh/Leith/Edinburgh locality. Their association with Musselburgh led them into sea trading on the east coast of Britain and Scotland resulting in offshoots of the family eventually becoming established in the Scottish east coast ports, Durham, Northumberland and London.”

Abner was a collier (charcoal burner).

From Grandmother Mary Emma (Downing) Rupert: Susanna (Ramage) Combs was the daughter of Abner and Gemima (Thatcher) Ramage. Abner Ramage was the son of John and Mary (Tharp) Ramage.

Written by Helen (Rupert) Jones: "January 1966 - We do not know much about John Ramage. Family tradition tells us that he lived in England and were people in "good circumstances", using pewter for everyday and silver for Sunday and for guests. They sent to the sea shore for two kinds of sand with which to scour the kitchen floor and clean the pewter.

When he brought his family to America they settled near Philadelphia, later lived near Zanesville, Ohio (or Wheeling), and then moved on westward to Marion County, Indiana to the area where Ben Davis, Indiana now stands.

John and his family were strict and dignified Quakers. We do not know how many, children he and his wife had but family tradition has it that "as soon as his daughters were old enough to work in the house John decreed that no more work was to be done by his wife, and that what John decreed was law!"

John's family were probably born near Zanesville, Ohio. In the 1850 census of Marion County, Indiana, his daughter, Suzanna, gave her birthplace as Pennsylvania, but Zanesville is prominent in the family story of the Ramages and Zionsville is not far from the Pennsylvania line."

4 Feb 1884: died at the home of her daughter, Eliza Letitia (Combs) Downing in Dick Johnson Township, Clay County, Indiana.

"Jan 1966: The information we have about Suzanna was told to me, Helen Irene (Rupert) Jones, by my mother, Mary Emma (Downing) Rupert. My mother could remember her grandmother very well.

Suzanna was a Quaker as were her parents. She was a stately looking woman, quiet, dignified, easy-going but "straight spoken". She used "thee" and "thou" and many other Quaker words. She had one black tooth. This tooth must have fascinated my mother as a child for she always mentioned it when speaking of her grandmother.

She lived with Eliza and John S. Downing for nineteen years. She never did any work, sat in a corner near the fireplace and smoked a stone pipe. She always wore a black silk dress and a lace cap.

When she was ninety years old in 1882, her mind suddenly broke down as she was being called to come to dinner. She started to the table then suddenly turned and ran into the bedroom and crawled under the bed. The family soon realized that her "poor mind had given 'way". She only lived three weeks from that time and had to be cared for as a baby.

Due to the crowded household of John S. and Eliza the children often had to sleep at the foot of some of the beds. My mother said that when she was a child she usually slept at the foot of her grandmother's (Suzanna's) bed and slept clasping the old woman's feet in her arms to keep them warm.

Family recollection was that she was ninety years old when she died in 1882. In the 1850 census of Marion County, Indiana her age is given as 50, placing her birth year at 1800. We believe this not correct - that her birth year was 1792."
