PO

PO havo T1

Poetry

This year your PO will be a bit different from last year. They are not about a chapter, but you will do three POs that together make up one big project. Your project will be about English poetry. At the end of the year you will actually perform a piece of poetry you have written yourself.

You will receive a grade for all three POs. PO T1 is an individual grade, PO T2 is a group effort and PO T3 will be both individually and jointly judged. Every PO will teach you things you need for the next PO. This means that if your grade is insufficient, you will have to do extra work with me before I can let you start work on the next PO.

For PO T1 you will get acquainted with poetry from different poets like Shakespeare, Adele and Ken Nesbitt. At the end of the trimester you will have learned enough to take a critical look at the poems and tell what you like and dislike and why. Below you will find what the contents of your report will have to be. In front of the title, it says whether you should write this in English (EN) or Dutch (NL).

EN/NL Sources

Throughout the trimester you will learn things that will help you write this report. For example, we’ll take a close look at how to write down your opinion and we’ll discuss how to use and name sources (bronnen). You can work on it in class after you have finished the rest of the work for that day. You are also allowed to go to the Mediatheek to look for information, or use a laptop in class to continue your work. If you have questions, you can ask me, or the people from the Mediatheek. They know what your assignment is and can help you find sources or write down what you found.

Keep in mind that this is a big PO. You cannot do this in an afternoon’s hard work. Follow the order of topics mentioned above and use the lessons on how to write a report etc. I will give you in class.

This PO will teach you the following:

- writing a coherent text in English

- formulating your opinion in Dutch

- the basics of poetry required for PO T2 and T3

- ‘diepgang’, ‘samenhang’ and ‘aantekeningen maken en uitwerken’

- thinking of the thoughts and meaning behind words

- Finding information and writing down where you found it (sources)

The deadline is the first lesson in the week of November 11th.

Good luck!
