Annotated Song Project:Project: Your group will choose a modern song and annotate it in the style of a Folger-edition Shakespearean play.Rationale: Shakespeare was the popular entertainment of his day. He wrote in poetry, but he used the slang of his time and referenced current events regularly. Consequently, when we read Shakespeare today, the text is usually annotated to give the audience needed background information and definitions. We don’t know what popular entertainment of our time will still be studied 400 years from now, but audiences will need the same kind of explanations. Objective: By annotating lyrics of a modern song, you will practice identifying and explaining metaphors and allusions, while becoming more comfortable with using the annotations in our Folger books.Process (you will have class time to work on this in groups):Choose a modern song (written in the last 40 years). The song must have a ‘clean’ or ‘radio’ version, and the lyrical content must be school appropriate (ex: no graphic descriptions of sex or violence).Set up a ‘landscape’ word or Google doc with two columns: One for your annotations, one for the lyrics of your song.Number the lines of your song lyrics, then annotate any metaphors, slang, or allusions in the lyrics, matching annotations to the line numbers. You must have AT LEAST 7 annotations.Example: “DNA” by Kendrick LamarAnnotations3 Cocaine quarter piece: 7 grams of rock cocaine (also known as ‘crack’ and considered a ‘lower class’ drug).3 war and peace: allusion to Leo Tolstoy’s novel of the same name, often considered one of the greatest works of literature in history.6 hustle…flow: allusion to 2005 film Hustle and Flow about an African-American man who escapes poverty through hip-hop music.9 Immaculate conception: allusion to the Christian story Jesus, said to be born to the Virgin Mary.11 Yeshua: Ancient Hebrew word for Jesus/ savior, derived from the word for ‘to rescue’. Lyrics1 I got, I got, I got, I got Loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA Cocaine quarter piece, got war and peace inside my DNA5 I got power, poison, pain and joy inside my DNA I got hustle though, ambition, flow, inside my DNA I was born like this, since one like this Immaculate conception10 I transform like this, perform like this Was Yeshua's new weapon I don't contemplate, I meditateRead more: Kendrick Lamar - DNA. Lyrics | MetroLyricsTips:Your song doesn’t have to be serious, but it does need to contain enough metaphors, slang, allusions (to pop culture or history), etc. to be annotatable. Don’t necessarily pick the first song that comes to mind.Remember that your audience is someone several hundred years in the future. What things might no longer exist or have been forgotten? ................
