|5 |Young Inventors’ Summer Camp |

|10 |1 Imagine that you could design your own adventure park. This is one of the many opportunities that kids of ages 6 to 12 are offered at |

|15 |Camp Invention, Virginia. The purpose of |

|20 |the camp is to encourage young people to work in teams and develop new ideas. The camp is one of several science, technology and math |

| |camps arranged by an organization called Invent Now in the United States. |

| |2 While young campers at Camp Invention are working together on their inventions, they are also learning the importance of recycling. The |

| |teams have to take into account that they cannot throw anything away and they are given a lot of new material to work with. Hannah Paulin,|

| |from Invent Now, explains that “you don’t need to buy expensive items to help you to be an inventor”. Campers have a laboratory where |

| |their teams practice new skills, take apart electronic appliances to see how they are made, build new machines and design new |

| |inventions. |

| |3 Over the course of the summer, campers learn that trial and error is an important part of creating something new. To demonstrate this, |

| |the teams are encouraged to record a video blog to show the process of discovery with their own inventions. In addition, real inventors |

| |come to Invent Now to speak to the participants and explain to them how their own inventions started, failed and eventually succeeded. For|

| |example, Jaarp Haartsen, the inventor of Bluetooth technology, spoke to campers about his experiences, including the ups and downs and the|

| |feelings of hope and disappointment along the way. |

| |4 Scott Vollmer, from Invent Now, believes that just one week in one of these camps has |

| |a big influence on the kids. “So many kids who come in want to be professional basketball players,” he says, “but after the camp they want|

| |to be engineers.” One thing they certainly |

| |learn is that thinking out of the box and working as part of a team can be fun. |
