We worked with leadership consultant Brad Hutchison to train our Board of Education and staff, at Central School District 51, on Professional Learning Communities, and later adopted that framework as the continuous improvement model for our district.The Illinois State Board of Education’s Academic Excellence Award honors schools who have sustained high performance for three consecutive years. Central Grade School received the award following the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years.Central School District 51 was the recipient of the SchoolSearch? Bright Star? Award in 2008 & 2009, honoring school districts in Illinois with the highest student performance at the lowest cost.Through our joint effort to spend every dollar wisely in support of our educational and extracurricular programs, Illini Central District 189 received financial recognition status from the Illinois State Board of Education for the years 2005-2007 and Central School District 51 received the same for the years 2008 and 2009.Because of declining enrollment and decreasing revenues at Illini Central, we negotiated the sale of our middle school facility at Easton to a local business and consolidated grades K-12 under one roof at the Mason City campus. In addition, we negotiated a long-term lease, of the middle school gymnasium, for athletic practices and competitions.In order to address a long history of contentious collective bargaining at Illini Central, we formed a Communication Committee to promote ongoing dialogue between the Board of Education and the Teachers’ Union, in regard to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, one year prior to our scheduled start for bargaining. As a result, we were able to reach an historic four year agreement after just two bargaining sessions.While principal at Illini Central Elementary from 2000 to 2005, despite an 11.7% increase in the low-income student population from 31.8% to 43.5%, our I.S.A.T. scores improved significantly in 3rd grade Reading, 3rd and 5th grade Math, and remained steady in 5th grade reading. Together with Illini Central’s Board of Education, we presented a workshop at the IASB*IASA*IASBO Joint Annual Conference in November 2004, in Chicago, IL, to highlight District 189’s Strategic Planning Initiative.
