Q: For a chronic partial rotator cuff tear, code M75.110 (nontraumatic) was suggested on a previous Ask The Expert ICD-10-CM session. However, what code would you use if this is a chronic partial rotator cuff tear (more than 6 months have passed) but specified originally as traumatic?

A: As indicated on previous question, a chronic nontraumatic partial rotator cuff tear would be coded to M75.110. If clinical documentation supports that rotator cuff tear was from previous traumatic injury, a code for the traumatic tear would be assigned with 7th character "D" for subsequent episode of care. M75 has excludes1 traumatic rotator cuff tear
