You can find the descriptions and information of the planned shore excursions below. You have the opportunity to reserve a spot for your excursion prior the cruise (depending on availibility). Of course it is possible to add excursions to your booking on board (depending on availability).

General Information Shore Excursions Quality of the bus The busses in Greenland are operated on extreme driving and weather conditions and therefore heavily loaded and this can be seen at the outward appearance. Dust development in the busses while driving gravel tracks can't be avoided. Toilets are not available on the busses. There are no typical coaches in Greenland, therefore school busses, city busses or offroad busses are used for our excursions. You can leave your backpacks or non-needed clothes on the bus - it will be locked at any stop.

Language All shore excursions organized by us take place in English. Every now and then, however, it can happen that a bilingual excursion (in German & English language) takes place.

Itinerary Strong winds, snow or even rain can affect the route of our excursions. The course of the tour and the planned stops are followed as far as possible due to weather and road conditions. We must reserve the right to make changes.

Zodiac transfer It might happen that the OCEAN DIAMOND will not be at the pier but on anchorage. In those cases you will be shuttled ashore with our own zodiacs.

Flights and Boat Trips The weather in Greenland is very unpredictable. Please note that flights and boats are particularly weather dependent on wind, ice and sea conditions. Cancellations are also frequent as the helicopter/plane/boat might be needed for other transportation reasons or for rescue and emergency, if those are the only ones available in this area. There is a risk that we have to move around the timetable or cancel all the planned tours if there

are changes. Please note that during the excursions there won?t be detailed explanations as it are captains and pilots and non of our guides will be able to join. For flight bookings please identify your weight in the shore excursion booking form as the weight limit is 265 lbs per person.

Various catastrophes have befallen the island of Heimaey and its inhabitants throughout history. Probably the most tragic incident to take place on the island is the volcanic eruption in 1973. Learn more about the geology and volcanology of Iceland during this 2 hours hike upon a volcano. After reaching the top of the volcano you will not get to see lava flow but you can still feel the warmth of its activity. The Greenland ice cap produces 250 million tons of icebergs each summer and their final journey begins when they break off from glaciers and plunge directly into crystal-clear fjords. Near Narsarsuaq you sail through the Qooroq Ice Fjord, weaving through hundreds of icebergs with a mesmerizing view of the Qooroq glacier off in the distance. The Qooroq Ice Fjord will be reached in approx. 20 minutes by boat. You cruise between the light blue icebergs which South Greenland is popular for and sail into the fjord to see the glacier in the distance. Here the captain stops the engine and you can enjoy the Arctic scenery and the silence.

In Qassiarsuk you will start your hike through stunning Arctic landscapes to the remote community of Tasiusaq. The largely treeless and rocky fjord landscape of South Greenland resembles the fjords of western Norway. At the end, you will find sheep farms that give a new meaning to the word `remote'. It used to be the home of sheep farmers but nowadays it is abandoned. Sheep and the occasional eagle might be seen, but this hike is mainly about the beauty of the landscape ? enjoy the beautiful view of the fjord system and the Arctic nature.

The ship's zodiac will bring you to the other side of the fjord, where you will visit the small settlement of Qassiarsuk. The settlement is housing some of the most interesting ruins from the Viking period and reconstructions will be open to visit. In Qassiarsuk it is possible to visit the ruins of the first Christian church in Greenland, as this was the site where Erik the Red and his wife settled in year 982-985. Your guide will lead the way, and you will learn about the Vikings' life and their Greenlandic history. Close to the ruins you will find reconstructions of a little church and a farm house.

An aerial perspective gives a true sense of Greenland's unbelievable size. During this "Flightseeing-Tour" by helicopter you see details that you would miss from an airplane. Flying low and slow, Greenland's spectacular natural features like glacial moulins and icebergs seem to be right below your feet. The helicopter flies at low altitude over the coastal mountains for about 15 minutes (per way) before landing in front of the glacier. Use the break of approx. 30 minutes to inspect and photograph the amazing glacier face before flying back.

On the way to Nuuk we will enter the fjord system by Arsuk, meeting the mouth of the Ikka Fjord. After boarding the zodiacs, the local ranger will lead you to the preserved area of the fjord. From the zodiacs, you will be able to spot the forest of remarkable mineral columns growing on the seabed. The stalactites are 32-50 feet tall and rise up just below the water surface. But also keep an eye out for musk oxen on the shore!

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland and its oldest town. Founded in 1728 by Danish- Norwegian missionary Hans Egede, Nuuk combines Arctic traditions and European urbanity. With around 16,000 inhabitants, Nuuk is considered a bustling metropolis compared to the rest of Greenland's cities and settlements. This guided tour brings you to the old city center and also includes a visit to the National Museum of Greenland which exhibits 500 year old Inuit-mummies discovered in Qilakitsoq 40 years ago. A short approx. 10 minutes bus ride takes you to the starting point: the foot of the mountain Lille Malene. On this two hours boat tour there is a very good chance of seeing humpback whales on close hand. The captains are very experienced and know how to sail carefully in order for the whales to stay close to the boats. You will learn about the hunting history, the city of Sisimiut and everyday life in Greenland. Inuits designed and built their boats based on their own experience and that of the generations before them, passed on through word-of-mouth. The word "kayak" means "man's boat" or "hunter's boat", and kayaks were a personal craft, each built by the man who used it with assistance from his wife, who sewed the skins and closely fitting his size for maximum manoeuvrability.

The Sisimiut Museum will open their doors exclusively for all guests of the OCEAN DIAMOND. It is one of the best preserved museums in Greenland und focusses on Greenlandic culture, Greenlandic trade and industry history as well as the important shipping industry. Uummannaq Museum tells fantastic stories from the region. Particularly interesting is the museum's exhibition of the extensive polar exploration that took place and Alfred Wegener's expedition on a propeller-driven sled on the Ice Sheet. Wegener became world-famous due to his theory of continental drift. His aim was to build a scientific station in the middle of the Ice Sheet. The museum also houses copies of the famous Qilaktisog mummies, which were discovered in this area in 1972. The church next door is the only stone church in Greenland and is also open for you to visit.

The orphanage in Uummannaq opens up its doors exclusively for you and invites you to learn and explore more about the life of a Greenlander and living on an island in Northwest-Greenland. The orphanage was founded in 1929 and belongs to the worldwide?s most northern residential intuitions. The staff created with a lot of enthusiasm and commitment a new home for traumatised and orphaned children. This orphanage is known all over the world as the children here are taught different instruments and singing with which they are going on world wide tours. Qeqertarsuaq is the only town on Disko Island (the big island) and a city that stands alone far off Greenland?s west coast and the Lyngmark Glacier that towers above the town. In the past whaling played a major and important role. In 1773, the first whaling base was opened up in Qeqertarsuaq. Nowadays, the inhabitants live from fishing and sealing.

The "Valley of the Winds" is located right outside of Qeqertarsuaq. Sometimes, a heavy wind blows on this Arctic plateau. That is where the valley Blaesedalen received its name from. But the valley also impresses with its waterfalls and large scenic variety with diversified flora and fauna. Kangerlussuaq?s location is a paradise for both reindeer and musk oxen, who thrive in this environment due to the relatively mild, stable and dry climate and the abundance of food.
