Second Grade Spelling Tid-Bits Spelling lists will be sent home the first day of each week. Spelling homework is due back every Thursday. If it’s a 4-day week or your child was absent, spelling will be due back on Friday. Your child needs to return just their tic-tac-toe board with the sentences on the back. Anything else is optional. Every week your child will have the spelling pattern written at the bottom of their list. Please be sure to reinforce this pattern at home when practicing spelling and reading. *If you’re unsure about the pattern please check out the newsletter or send me an email! Spelling tests will be every Friday (or last day of the week). Please assist your child to make corrections and sign and return. Many spelling lists will have an “oddball” or “rule-breaker” word(s). This will be a word that looks like it should follow the spelling pattern, but does not. On your child’s spelling test, they will be given 4 “surprise words”. These words WILL NOT be included in the spelling list for the week. They WILL go along with the pattern of the week. For example, if the rule is short a with CVC words, they will be given a short a word with the CVC pattern that was NOT on their list. This shows application of the rule, not just memorization. This goes along with the Words Their Way program that we incorporate at QE!over Each week your child will complete a word sort that reinforces their spelling pattern and includes that may or may not be from their spelling list. These word cards will go home in a manila envelope that should stay in your child’s folder. These words are excellent for spelling practice on Thursdays or for free space spelling! Here are some ideas:Speed Sort: Time your child to see how fast they can sort the words into the correct categories.Match-Up: Lay out the word cards face down. Have your child flip and match words that have the same pattern.Speed Read: See how quickly your child can read all the words correctly.Color Code: Your child can color the consonants and the vowels to notice the spelling pattern.Feel free to brainstorm your own ideas of how to incorporate these cards into spelling practice at home! Each week your child will also complete word work activities. If your child runs out of time to complete these, they may come home blank. Feel free to use these as additional practice or free space spelling activities! Have Fun!!! ................
