CREATING A MEMORIAL ASSIGNMENT - Weebly

GREATEST WWII Memorial Assignment

Memorials are commissioned typically some time after a significant event has taken place. They are funded usually through state government or private contributions, and strategically placed on or nearby the site of the event or a place important to the person. Memorials commemorate these events/people so that their story is never forgotten. They are an excellent way to ensure that all future generations will not forget their importance.

Your task:

Working with a partner, you will form a design team with the stated goal of creating OR researching a WWII memorial for a significant Canadian event/person. The scope of the topics to choose from does not necessarily need to be limited to important battles, but it must reflect Canada's participation in WWII.

Don't forget - the veterans of WWII, and all those affected by it are counting on you to represent their courage, feelings, emotions, and sacrifice - so don't let them down!

Assignment specifics:

✓ STEP 1: First you must agree on a topic.

Some ideas might include: D-Day, Liberation of the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Women in WWII, Treatment of Enemy Aliens, Canadians at Sea, Canadians in the Air, Raid on Dieppe, Italian Campaign, Battle of Britain, Mackenzie King, Elsie McGill, C.D. Howe, or one of your choosing - with your teacher's approval.

✓ STEP 2: Come up with a plan to build your own.

Include a description of:

• Why are you building it?

• What/who does it honour?

• Why is it important to commemorate it (significance of the event)?

• Where will it be located?

• When will it be dedicated?

• Who will be invited to the ceremony?

• What will it look like it (rough outline)

- What is it made of? What are the Dimensions? What will be inscribed on it? Who will look after it?

✓ STEP 3: Design it!

✓ Find materials to build a model of your memorial. Use as many creative materials to showcase your model as you can find (without spending much if any money). Please limit the size of your model (it should be a ‘scale model) that will fit in the classroom with about 20 others…

✓ STEP 4; Prepare a presentation.

• You will be given 5 minutes in front of a select number of Members of the Government of Canada (your classmates) to convince them as to why your memorial should be selected.

• The Prime Minister (Mr. Harrison) has the final say.

• Focus on - interesting aspects of the memorial, background and significance of the event, any problems/challenges encountered in building it, why yours is so SPECIAL!

Evaluation:

You will be evaluated on the soundness of your design, effectiveness of your presentation, and thoroughness of your plan.
