SEL Support for Teachers (K-5)1) What is SEL?Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, and make responsible decisions. SEL is the stuff that will never be assessed on an SOL but will be “tested” every day in the game of life. It is the foundation from which students and school communities recognize challenges and develop skills to overcome them. SEL is part of a multifaceted approach to developing safe and nurturing school environments.2) What are the components of SEL? The five components of SEL are:Self-Awareness-identifying emotions, self-efficacy, self-perceptionSelf- Management-impulse control, perseverance, goal-settingSocial Awareness-perspective taking, empathy, respect for othersRelationship Skills-communication, social engagement, building relationshipsResponsible Decision-Making-identifying problems, reflecting, evaluating3) How will SEL be implemented at RPS? Richmond Public Schools will use the Second Step Program to implement SEL. Second Step is a research-based, teacher-informed, and classroom-tested to promote the social-emotional development, safety, and well-being of children from Early Learning through Grade 8. Second Step offers real world, student-centered lessons that are easy to understand and engaging for students. As all of the research is done, this is a turn-key program led by school counselors that will fit seamlessly into our established Community Circles.RPS will implement SEL using Second Step as follows:Tuesday – School Counselors will provide a recorded Second Step Lesson to teachers to be shown during Community Circles related to the SEL theme of the week. If school is closed on Tuesday e.g. Election Day or the week is shortened e.g. Thanksgiving Break, the new lesson will be presented on the following Tuesday. In this case, teachers have the ability to reinforce previously taught SEL skills as part of their Community Circle. On Tuesdays, the Community Circle time is extended by five minutes to ensure rollout of the main lesson. Wednesday through Friday – School Counselors will provide teachers with supplemental activities from Second Step that relate to the theme of the recorded lesson shown that week. Teachers will lead activities/discussions with students during Community Circles. They will be provided with a menu of activities and discussion starters from the school counselor but they may also use other resources as long as it is focused on the theme for the week.Counselors will incorporate the Second Step core themes in their classroom counseling lessons ( which include any encore time they have with students). A monthly calendar of topics will be provided to teachers and administrators. Activities and discussions will be sent to teachers one week in advance of the lesson.Float Time - Social Workers and Behavioral Specialists can utilize Second Step materials for Tier 2 Intervention/small group reinforcement.4) When will the program start?Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - School Counselor will work with teachers to understand the components of Second Step during School-wide PD.Monday, October 26, 2020 - There will be a pre-survey given to students in grades 3-8. Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - Teachers will show the first Second Step recorded lesson during Community Circles.Wednesday, October 28th - K-2 teachers will take the pre-survey assessment for their students. 5) Who should I contact if I have questions about SEL?If you have questions about SEL, please contact your school counselor or Tonette Craig Instructional Specialist for Elementary School Counseling at tcraig@ ................
