|Having hosted a successful open evening, you now have a group of students who want to take part in outdoor activities. To prepare them|

|you will take part in a number of training sessions to learn the relevant techniques and skills that you will need. You will take part|

|in a planned programme under the guidance of a qualified instructor in two outdoor and adventurous activities. While taking part in |

|the two outdoor and adventurous activities you will maintain a logbook/diary for each activity and review your performance for this |

|assignment. |

| |

| |

|In this assignment you will have the opportunity to provide evidence towards the following criteria: |

|P5 |demonstrate techniques and skills appropriate to two outdoor and adventurous activities |

|P6 |review the performance of another individual participating in two outdoor and adventurous activities, identifying strengths |

| |and areas for improvement |

|P7 |carry out a review of own performance in outdoor and adventurous activities, identifying strengths and areas for improvement|

|M4 |review and justify choice of techniques demonstrated in outdoor and adventurous activities |

|M5 |explain identified strengths and areas for improvement in own performance in outdoor and adventurous activities, making |

| |recommendations for further development of identified areas for improvement |

|D3 |justify recommendations relating to identified areas for improvement in own performance in outdoor and adventurous |

| |activities. |

TASK 1 – Technique P5, M4

You will take part in a number of planned practical sessions for two outdoor and adventurous activities. After taking part in the practical sessions:

a) keep a logbook/diary which records the techniques and skills that you have learned and used within the session.

b) your logbook/diary should demonstrate the techniques and skills which are relevant to the activities (P5) and demonstrate that you know when and how to use the techniques.

c) within your logbook/diary you should review and justify your choice of techniques used in the sessions (M4).

|Guidance |

|A3 Information Sheet on page 4 gives guidance on producing these forms of evidence and an example of a learner’s diary entry. |

|You should discuss situations when you have used the technique learned during the session and justify why you used it. |

|Your instructor/tutor should submit a witness statement/observation record to prove that they saw you demonstrate the appropriate |

|techniques and skills for your two chosen activities. |

TASK 2 – Review P6, P7

Upon completion of the practical sessions you need to complete a review of your own and another individual’s performance in two outdoor and adventurous activities. By completing the review you will identify areas for improvement which can be developed and improved before the expedition. To help you complete the review, you should use completed logbooks, observation feedback documents and any video recordings gathered from Task 1. You should then carry out the following:

a) review your own (P7) and someone else’s performance (P6) in two outdoor and adventurous activities, identifying strengths and areas for improvement for both participants. To help you do this you should follow the SWOT analysis system using A3 Task Sheet 1 (page 5). Use the SWOT analysis method to identify the strengths and weaknesses in performance and identify the opportunities and threats relevant to future development.

b) Based on the results of the SWOT analyses you should make recommendations for areas of improvement for yourself and the other individual. You should then complete a SMART analysis for your own performance and an analysis for the other individual using A3 Task Sheet 2 (page 6).

TASK 3 – Areas for improvement M5, D3

After completing a review of your own performance in two outdoor and adventurous activities, you now need to decide how you will develop your performance further. You need to do the following:

a) explain the strengths and areas for improvement that you identified in your own performance in two outdoor and adventurous activities (M5 partial).

a) make realistic recommendations for further development of identified areas for improvement (M5 partial) using your completed SMART analysis. For example:

● courses, training, leadership awards, observing others etc.

b) justify your recommendations relating to identified areas for improvement in your own performance in outdoor and adventurous activities (D3).

|Guidance |

|For part a, you should give reasons and evidence for why you chose your strengths and areas for improvements. |

|For part c, you should give reasons why you think the recommendations will help you improve. You should also analyse the recommendations|

|that you have made. Will they be easy or difficult to achieve? Are there any barriers to completing the recommendations? |

A3 Information Sheet: Diaries and logbooks

Recording

It is important to keep a record of your experience when taking part in outdoor and adventurous activities. This is an effective way of monitoring your performance and your progress as you gain confidence and develop your skills. It will also help you when you look back on your performance and reflect on the things that you did well and areas you could improve on.

Diaries and logbooks

The simplest way of recording your experience is in the form of a diary or logbook. This is simply your own record of each session that you have taken part in, with a written explanation of your performance in your own words. You could also include your thoughts and feelings. For example, I was confident, nervous, scared etc.

Example of a diary entry:

| |

|Performance Diary Entry 21st November 2010 |

| |

|Today’s rock climbing was at an indoor wall at the Awesome Wall climbing centre. I was looking forward to it as I gained a lot|

|of confidence after last week’s session. I have definitely mastered the technique of putting on my harness correctly and |

|needed no help at all from the instructor today. My tying in is really good and my figure of eight knot was perfect. Today I |

|belayed by myself for the first time and found it difficult to master the V123 technique. |

|Note: you will need two copies of this task sheet – one to complete a SWOT analysis for yourself and one to complete a SWOT analysis for |

|your fellow participant. |

The SWOT analysis system can be used to structure feedback.

● Strengths – What did I/they do well? What am I/they good at?

● Weaknesses – What did I/they need to improve? What prevents me/them from performing at my/their best?

● Opportunities – What resources are available to assist my/their development?

● Threats – What could prevent me/them from achieving my/their objective?

Consider a session you have participated in recently, and complete this table.

|SWOT analysis for (add your name or name of fellow| |

|participant): | |

|Date of session: | |

| | |

| | |

| | |

|Note: you will need two copies of this task sheet – one for your own SMART targets and one for setting SMART targets for another |

|individual. |

Use the SMART method to help you set three targets for yourself/another individual in the table below. (An example has been given to help you.)

● Specific – Well defined and applicable to a precise element of the activity.

● Measurable – There must be a way of measuring development. Ideally a figure should be used; for example, an improvement in speed of 10%.

● Achievable – The goal must be attainable.

● Realistic – Consider all elements that may prevent achievement. Is the target now realistic?

● Timed – Set a timescale for completion of the target.

| |Example |Target 1 |Target 2 |Target 3 |

|Measurable |I currently stand on one in | | | |

| |five attempts. I aim to stand| | | |

| |on one in two attempts. | | | |

| | | | | |

|Achievable |I have a week’s surfing | | | |

| |booked in Cornwall, so I have| | | |

| |plenty of opportunity to | | | |

| |practise. | | | |

| | | | | |

|Realistic |I am currently progressing | | | |

| |well and feel that I have the| | | |

| |potential to achieve this if | | | |

| |I set my mind to it. | | | |

|Timed |I aim to complete this by the| | | |

| |end of my surf trip in two | | | |

| |weeks. | | | |
