Ohio State Continues Road Swing

at Illinois, No. 21 Northwestern

Buckeyes take on Illini Thursday in Champaign, face Wildcats Sunday in Evanston

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team travels to Illinois and No. 21 Northwestern for a pair of Big Ten matches this week. The Buckeyes take on the Illini at 8 p.m. ET Thursday in Champaign before squaring off against the Wildcats at 1 p.m. ET Sunday in Evanston.

list at 0.83 and tied for fifth on the career shutout list with 11, along with third-team All-Big Ten selections in senior midfielder Sarah Roberts and sophomore defender Izzy Rodriguez. In all, the Buckeyes return 260 combined starts from their eight returning starters.

OHIO STATE OF LATE Ohio State lost its Big Ten opener, 4-0, to No. 21 Penn State last Friday at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. The Nittany Lions scored threee goals in a nineminute span late in the first half and added another goal in the 50th minute.

A LOOK AT 2018 The Buckeyes, led by 22nd-year head coach and 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year Lori Walker-Hock, welcome back 21 letterwinners and eight starters from the 2017 squad that went 15-5-1, including 9-2-0 in conference play, to earn the first outright Big Ten championship in program history and advance to the eighth NCAA Tournament in the last nine seasons.

BUCKEYES SECOND IN B1G PRESEASON POLL Ohio State was selected second in the Big Ten preseason coaches' poll, the conference office announced Aug. 13. The Buckeyes, who were picked behind only Penn State and ahead of Rutgers, Northwestern and Wisconsin, also had seniors Arden Holden and Sarah Roberts and sophomore Izzy Rodriguez named players to watch.

VATNE NAMED B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Coming off her hat trick against Morehead State, midfielder Emaly Vatne garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference office announced Sept. 4. Ohio State's Big Ten weekly awards for 2018:

SOME MORE NOTES - Ohio State is 38-1-2 when scoring at least two goals in a game since the start of 2014, including 1-0-0 in 2018 and 11-0-0 a season ago. The Buckeyes went 5-0-1 when scoring at least twice in 2014 before going a perfect 11-0-0 in 2015 and 10-1-1 in 2016. - Ohio State is 3-0-0 on the year when scoring first after it went 15-1-0 when scoring first last season and 10-0-1 in 2016. - Ohio State was 4-1-1 in overtime contests in 2017 and 9-2-7 in overtime matches over the last three seasons. - Devon Kerr's nine shutouts last season tied her with Emily Haynam and Amber Barnes for second on the Buckeyes' single-season shutout list. Kerr also sits tied for fourth on the Ohio State career shutout list with Emily Haynam with 13. - Kayla Fischer became the first Buckeye freshman to score the team's first goal of the season since Lisa Collison did so in a 2-0 win over Xavier in 2005. - In the win over No. 5 Florida, the Buckeyes knocked off their highest-ranked opponent since a 2-0 victory over No. 3 Penn State in the 2004 Big Ten Tournament championship game. - The eight goals scored by the Buckeyes against Morehead State tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. Ohio State also scored eight



goals in an 8-1 win over Xavier in 2004. The highest scoring outputs in Ohio State history:

Vatne becomes the third freshman in program history to notch a hat trick, joining Sammy Edwards in 2014 and Nichelle Prince in 2013, and her seven points against the Eagles were the secondmost in a single game in Ohio State history. Lisa Suttmiller notched eight on three goals and two assists at Valparaiso in 1996.

SCOUTING ILLINOIS Illinois is 6-3-0 on the year, 1-1-0 in Big Ten play, after splitting matches at Minnesota and Wisconsin last weekend. Katie Murray (4g, 3a) leads an Illini offense which is averaging 2.44 goals per game while Jaelyn Cunningham has recorded a 1.00 goals-against average with three shutouts.

Ohio State holds a 10-9-3 lead in the all-time series with Illinois, after a 7-0 win in Columbus last year.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN Northwestern, ranked 21st in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll, is 6-1-2 overall, 0-1-1 in conference play, after playing to a 1-1 draw and dropping a 2-0 decision at Minnesota last weekend. Brenna Lovera leads the Wildcats with four goals and a pair of assists while Mackenzie Wood has tallied six clean sheets and a 0.42 goals-against average.

Ohio State leads the all-time series with Northwestern, 14-7-2, after dropping a 1-0 contest last season in Columbus.

SEVEN AT HOME AND ADMISSION IS FREE The Buckeyes will play five more home matches at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in 2018. Admission is free to all home matches.

THE COACHING STAFF Ohio State is under the direction of 22nd-year head coach Lori Walker-Hock. The three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year has guided the team to 12 NCAA Tournament berths (2002-03-04-07-09-10-11-12-1315-16-17), two Big Ten regular season championship (2010, 2017) and three Big Ten Tournament championships (2002, 2004, 2012). Her record at Ohio State is 244-164-41 and her career record, including two seasons at Kansas, is 257-187-42.
