Both the common cold and the flu are respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses. As a result the two types of illnesses have similar flu-like symptoms. This makes it very difficult for you to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. However, the flu is worse than the common cold and usually results in more intense symptoms.

If you contract the common cold you are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. However colds generally do not result in serious health problems, like pneumonia, bacterial infections or hospitalizations. To help determine whether you have a cold or the flu, special tests can be done by a medical profession during the first few days of sickness.

Because both the cold and flu have such similar symptoms, there similar treatment options to help with the recovery process:

• Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated (between 9-13 cups of waters or juices per day)

• Get lots of fresh air

• Eat healthy foods such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables

• Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption

• Relax – stress can decrease immunity

• Avoid contact with known allergens

• Avoid touching your face, eyes or rubbing your nose

• Use Eye drops

• Cleanse hands alcohol-based hand sanitizer (to avoid getting others sick)

• Use hand cream or lotion

• Take over the counter drugs

• Consume cough drops/lozenges

• Get lots of rest

• Take vitamins

If you follow these simple treatment options, you will be back on your feet and feeling better in no time!
