Overview:

Obesity and overweight result from multifaceted interactions between genes and the environment. An imbalance between energy expenditure and energy intake causes an individual to become overweight or obese. Most often, this imbalance is due to a long-term sedentary lifestyle and/or excessive caloric intake. In countries throughout the world, obesity has reached epidemic proportions. In the United States, obesity affects nearly 1/3 of the population and it is reported that 65% OF Americans Over age 20 are either overweight or obese (). Obesity is a major health problem and results in detrimental health care problems. It is the second leading cause of preventable deaths, following smoking. It is a problem that affects society as a whole and results in adverse health conditions related to weight gain and the associated expenses of health care. Costs related to obesity are greater than $78 billion dollars per year and account for 9% of all medical expenses nationally.
