Letter and Sound of the Week: Ee Edna Elephant

Themes of the Week: Bear Week

Words of the Week: up, down

Dear Kindergarten Families:

Once again, no one caught a leprechaun last week! The traps were fun, and the students described to me and to each other how they work. Thank you to our room parents, Mrs. Kalus and Mrs. Gnann for bringing in their blenders and ice cream to make shamrock shakes for the kids! This week we will have a “bear” unit and we’ll read, discuss, and compare stories about Goldilocks, Corduroy, and a fact book about bears.

Language Arts: Retelling a story in order, is an important comprehension skill. When reading with your child, ask them to retell the story, or what happens next. The Three Little Bears is a good story for your child to tell to you, perhaps using the picture pocket that will be sent home this week.

Review the letters: S, M, R, T, B, N, H, V, A, C, P, G, F, L, K, I, Q, D, Z, X, O, W, Y, E

Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can, go, an, and, we, look, no, not, love, at, here, on, this, is, it, you, are, for, have, said, will, do, big, little, play, with, me, he, she, get, some, put, was, yes, up, down

“Juicy” Words from A Day with a Vet – healthy, prevent and a Day with a Letter Carrier – load, important

One School, One Book: We will attempt to finish reading “The Lemonade War” this week. It has been difficult to keep their attention for an entire chapter, so I appreciate some of you are reading it at home!

Math: Adding and subtracting to ten is our focus through year-end. Doing this skill quickly and easily will prepare them for double digit adding next year. 3D shapes and numbers to 30 are other focus skills.

Science: Last week we filled a bottle, put it in the freezer, and this week we will document what happens when it turns to ice (expansion). This week we will experiment with evaporation, placing several cups of water around the room to see what happens!
