Rx for ATTENDANCE

The success of every endeavor we undertake as Masons is dependent upon the participation of each member of the Lodge. When we review our past associations with the Fraternity and recall the various experiences we have had as members, it becomes apparent that participation of many Brothers were required for each of us to attain our goal to become a 32° Scottish Rite Mason.

Participation can take many forms, and it is up to the individual to decide how his talents may be best utilized. One of the most important ways is to attend Stated Communications. This is one aspect that each member has total control over. For those who do not attend the meetings on a regular basis, set a goal of attending at least once a quarter, and you will be the better Mason because of it.

SOMETHING TO CAUSE REFLECTION

I watched them tearing a building down.

A gang of men in a busy town.

With a ho-heave-ho and a lusty yell

They swung a beam, and the sidewall fell.

I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled,

As the men you’d hire if you had to build?”

He gave a laugh and said, “No, indeed!

Just common labor is all I need.

I can easily wreck in a day or two,

What builders have taken a year or two.

And I thought to myself as I went away,

Which of these roles have I tried to play?

Am I a builder who works with care,

Measuring life by the rule and square?

Am I shaping my deeds to a well-known plan,

Patiently doing the best I can?

Or am I a wrecker, who walks the town,

Content with the labor of tearing down.

CORNERSTONES

This article was in the Masonic Information Center “FOCUS”, Volume 5, Issue 4, Dec 1998.

In the March 1998 issue of Focus we talked about the importance of the Masonic Cornerstone Laying Ceremony and its significance in public awareness by introducing the community to Freemasonry. We would like to share the following story with our readers:

Grand Master Carl B. Smith and the officers of the Grand Lodge of Washington laid three cornerstones in one day in Pasco, Washington, on September 19, 1998. Pasco is one of the Tri-Cities situated in Southeastern Washington State near the border with Oregon and Idaho.

Once known principally for agriculture and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the Tri-Cities have attracted high-tech industries because of the excellence of the area’s schools. A center of population growth, Pasco, Kennewick and Richland have been opening or rebuilding at least one school each, per year, for the past five years. The Grand Lodge of Washington, in addition to the three cornerstones laid in Pasco on September 19th, has now laid fourteen cornerstones in the Tri-Cities since 1994.

The Pasco cornerstones at Emerson, Robert Frost and Whittier Elementary schools were notable for another reason. Grand Master Smith presented the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. George Merdock, with a copy of the Friend to Friend brochure after the first cornerstone. Dr. Merdock has since petitioned Pasco Lodge No. 173 for the three Degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry.
