JOB DESCRIPTION

Post: Urology Nurse Specialist

Grade: Band 6

Hours of duty: 37.5 per week/150 hours per 4 weeks

Annual Leave: 27 days per annum plus 8 bank holidays rising to 29 days after 5 years NHS service and 33 days after 10 years NHS service

Managerially accountable to: Service Manager, Surgery

Professionally accountable to: Assistant Director of Nursing, Surgery

Summary

This post is central within the busy Urology service, which is a key specialty in a hospital with a community focus and a major element of its work is ambulatory. Indeed the department undertakes a third more surgery on a day case basis than the national average. This means that the department has a central role in the strategic direction of the Whittington and within the redeveloped site, where ambulatory and diagnostic facilities are being significantly enhanced.

The post-holder will provide high quality specialist nursing care to patients with urological conditions. The post-holder will provide support and advice to patients and their families as well as acting as a resource to other professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical.

1. Work independently with minimal supervision.

2. To undertake nurse led clinics in the line with identified protocols and clinical guidance. The list of clinics include:

• Trial without Catheter.

• Erectile Dysfunction.

• Haematuria Clinic.

• Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection.

• Prostate Assessment Clinic.

• Hormone Clinic.

• Catheter Change.

3. Identify overt and covert patient problems through assessment, communicate the findings of the consultation to the patient and primary carer(s) and plan action. This might include: education of the patient and primary carer(s) recommendations for change(s) in therapeutic regimes, requests for more data from patient, initiation of specialist care techniques. Evaluate, with the patient and primary carers, the effectiveness of recommended interventions.

4. Advise and support the needs of patients and their carers, acting as their advocate to promote and facilitate quality and individualised care, providing written information as necessary.

5. To liaise with the medical team to report any significant clinical changes reported by patients and facilitate any recommendations following medical discussion.

6. To promote and maintain effective communication.

7. To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.

8. To act as a resource for the specific skills and care for patients, carers and other Multidisciplinary team members across the Trust.

9. To oversee a high standard of patient care based on the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, involving the patient, those close to them and the care provided.

10. In collaboration with the Multidisciplinary team, to develop specific written information for patients and carers.

11. Establish and maintain accurate documentation of the assessment and management of urological disorders in accordance with the UKCC standards for Records and Record Keeping.

12. To cover annual leave and sick leave of the ward-based Urology Nurse Specialist.

Managerial Duties:

1. To attend and actively participate in the multidisciplinary team meeting and treatment planning/referral decisions.

2. To assess the quality of care given by the evaluation of patient service, effecting change where necessary and demonstrating patient user involvement when appropriate.

3. To liaise with the Clinical Lead and Lead Manager on issues of service management and development for the Whittington Hospital.

4. To liaise closely with the service manager, maximising the use of available resources to benefit patient care and ensuring that any changes in practice that impact budgetary resources are considers fully.

5. To promote/manage the efficient and effective use of supplies, provisions and equipment within the designated budget.

6. Contribute to the identification and discussion of cost pressures and financial constraints.

7. To work with the lead managers in developing the Urology Service.

8. To attend the weekly Urology Clinical Governance Meeting.

Teaching and Audit:

1. Establish and evaluate programmes of education and training for nurses, house officers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team in the area of urology. To work collaboratively with relevant educational staff to provide teaching programmes to meet those needs.

2. To identify the specific education needs of individual patients and carers and facilitate meeting those needs.

3. Prepare and provide learning materials for use within the clinical areas.

4. Participate in clinical supervision programme as supervisee and supervisor.

5. In collaboration with other specialist nurses, identify and encourage research-based practice in relation to urological care within the Trust and with primary care staff.

6. Participate in nursing and collaborative research in urological care.

7. To initiate and or participate in clinical audit in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary team.

Education and Research:

1. To review and develop written policies, protocols and guidance relevant to this patient group, in conjunction with the Multidisciplinary team. These should be updated where necessary.

2. To keep up to date with developments in Urological care by regularly reviewing the literature and attending the relevant study days. To fulfil PREP requirements.

3. To be responsible for own professional development and maintenance of standards in negotiation with the lead clinician and lead nurse.

4. To undertake or contribute to any research programmes which have been formally agreed within the limits of timing and funding.

5. To promote health promotion and education within the service.

6. Attend mandatory training.
